Prepare yourself for hurricane season
What we love about Savannah-- our beaches, rivers and low-lying marshes-- can also make us vulnerable to large storms and hurricanes. But if you think ahead and prepare yourself, you'll get through any weather event safely. The City of Savannah Hurricane Guide is a starting point to help you create a comprehensive preparedness plan. To find more detailed information, including resources on preparing yourself for non-weather-related emergencies and disasters, please visit the sites listed in our related links. On the Chatham Emergency Mangement Agency Web site, you can subscribe to CEMA Alert and have local emergency information sent directly to your email.
Special needs residents
On the Coastal Health District Web site, special needs residents can fill out a form to be placed on the special needs registry. From the Coastal Health District Web site: "The registry is for people who require observation, assessment and maintenance; those with contagious health conditions requiring minimal precautions or isolation; those with chronic conditions who need more skilled nursing care but don’t require hospitalization; or those needing help with medications and monitoring of vital signs. This registry is provided to local emergency management agencies. In an actual emergency, response agencies will try to provide assistance, but this cannot be guaranteed."
What's your plan?
Following a severe weather event, the City's resources will be targeted at clearing debris and restoring services. Every citizen should have the food, water, medicine and other supplies they need to comfortably wait out this period (see the Hurricane Guide for suggestions). Collecting these materials now means avoiding long lines and possible store shortages later. Preparing in advance will also keep you organized and efficient if an evacuation becomes necessary.
You can download the Hurricane Guide below. The guide is a starting point to begin formulating your own plan. It includes tips, resources and checklists to help you prepare yourself, your family, your pets and your home for hurricane season. Be sure to visit the sites listed in the Related Links section of this page for additional planning help.
