About the Department
The Public Works and Water Resources Bureau's Sanitary Sewer Conveyance and Water Distribution Department is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and management of the City's Sanitary Sewer Conveyance and Water Distribution Systems. The department is responsible for three activities: water distribution, sewer maintenance, and sanitary sewer lift station maintenance.
Water Distribution
- Repair, install, and construct water mains and water meters, perform cross-connection testing and investigation to assure no contamination of the potable water distribution system
- Perform meter installation and maintenance (both direct and automated reading of meters) and/or water service lateral repairs, installations / construction of lines, water taps, and service connections
- Perform fire hydrant repairs and installations
- Locate water, sewer, and storm lines to assure compliance with the Georgia Dig Law
Sewer Maintenance
- Repair, install, and construct sanitary sewer gravity mains along with the preparation and setup of bypass pumps when required for sewer main and lift station repairs
- Assist in the management of all sanitary sewer line relocation / replacement project
Sanitary Sewer Lift Station Maintenance
- Operation and maintenance of electrical facilities at all lift stations which include operation of portable electrical generators
- Operate and maintain the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system and fabrication of control panels, and assist bureau SCADA personnel
- Operation and maintenance of all lift station systems (includes pumps, piping, valves, and other ancillary facilities) and bypassing of stations when required (includes operation of portable pumps where on-site bypasses are not available)
Mission Statements
- Distribution - To operate and maintain the water distribution infrastructure necessary to deliver safe potable water at flows and pressure sufficient to meet current residential, commercial, industrial, and institutional requirements and to provide fire protection demands in the service area and to accommodate and promote growth
- Sewer Maintenance - To ensure the collection and uninterrupted transportation / flow of sanitary sewage through a series of gravity and force main pipes within the city – maintained sanitary sewer conveyance system in accordance with local, state and federal regulations
- Lift Station Maintenance - To facilitate efficient transportation of sanitary sewage to the City's wastewater treatment plants through the utilization of sanitary sewer lift / pump stations and force main systems
