[ARCHIVED] City crews respond to minor sewage spill

For Immediate Release
Date: February 23, 2017

City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at LS 158 – Crossroads Parkway, at 9:45 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2017. The spill was the result of grease which covered the station controls and prevented the station from turning on, causing a manhole to overflow. The total volume discharged was estimated to be 200 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was corrected by 9:47 p.m. Crews turned the station on and removed the grease. Staff will investigate how the grease entered the system. The spill area was cleaned and mitigated where the overflow occurred. Spill notifications will be placed at the spill site, 300 feet south of the station at the storm drainage canal on Crossroads Parkway and at Highway 21 / St. Augustine Creek. All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
