City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 599 King George Boulevard, Thursday, March 28, 2013. The spill was the result of sewage discharge caused by a force main failure at City Lift Station 108. The total volume discharged was 2,500 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
City Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 12:00 p.m. yesterday, and the spill was corrected at 12:05p.m. the same day. The Lift Station was immediately shut down and the ditch was contained before the spill reached the Forest River. Along with City Jet-Vac Trucks, by-pass pumps were set up and pumped the contaminated water from the ditch into the City Sewer Collection System. The force main was repaired. The Tidal ditch before and after the containment was sampled and there was no indication that the sewage made it past the containment to the Forest River. Spill notifications were put at Lott’s Island and at Bell’s Landing.
All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
