Fort Pulaski Workers Village Archelogical Project
Municipal Archives to Host Fort Pulaski Exhibit Jan. 8-19

SAVANNAH (Jan. 5, 2023) – Beginning on Monday, Jan. 8, the public can visit a new exhibit in City Hall celebrating the 100th anniversary of Fort Pulaski National Monument joining the National Park Service.

The exhibit, “Fort Pulaski Workers’ Village Archeological Project,” will be on display in City Hall through Jan. 19 and documents Park archeologists’ recent investigation of the Workers’ Village on Cockspur Island.

The village was home to the enslaved and free people who built Fort Pulaski, and later, the hospital patients, self-emancipated contrabands, soldiers, and officers’ families. The village was thoroughly demolished in an 1881 hurricane, but archeological traces remain.

“This project unearthed years of important local history, a part of which we are proud to display in City Hall this month,” Municipal Archives Director Luciana Spracher said. “We’re excited to work with our partners at Fort Pulaski to help celebrate the 100th anniversary milestone, while highlighting the importance of archaeological work in examining and documenting a more complete history.”

As a companion to the exhibit, on Jan. 10 at noon, the City’s Municipal Archives will host the talk “From Fort Construction to Hurricane Destruction.” In this presentation, Fort Pulaski’s Acting Chief of Resources Laura Seifert will discuss the layered and complex history of Fort Pulaski as revealed through the Workers’ Village archeological project, including the latest finds.

This program is free and open to the public, but space is limited and registration is required. Email Archives@savannahga.gov to reserve your space now.
