[ARCHIVED] Mayor asks residents to donate gifts for patients

For Immediate Release
Date: November 29, 2012

Mayor Edna Jackson is collecting gifts for Savannah’s Annual Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade – an event that helps make Christmas special for patients at the Georgia Regional Hospital of Savannah. The Georgia Municipal Association began the Mayors’ Christmas Motorcade in 1958 at the request of then-Governor Ernest Vandiver as a way of providing holiday gifts for the patients of Georgia’s mental health hospitals. Many patients have no contact with their families and the gifts given through the Mayor’s Motorcade are all they receive during the holiday season.

As residents head out to do their holiday gift shopping this year, Mayor Jackson asks that they please take a moment and consider purchasing a special gift for one of the patients at Georgia Regional. Patients range in age from 6 to 90. All gifts should be new and unwrapped and dropped off under the tree on the first floor of City Hall before December 4th. City Hall is located at 2 East Bay Street and is open Monday thru Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Mayors Motorcade will be Wednesday, Dec. 5, departing the National Guard Armory on Eisenhower Drive at 10 a.m. It includes dozens of Mayors and other officials from across the region.
