[ARCHIVED] Got a parking ticket? Pay for it with canned food donation

For Immediate Release
Date: December 7, 2015

If you’re a parking violator with a packed pantry, the City of Savannah has a deal for you this holiday season.

From Monday, Dec. 7, through Thursday, Dec. 17, anyone with a City of Savannah parking citation for an expired meter or overtime in a time zone can get that ticket waived by donating canned food to those in need as part of the “Food for Fines” incentive.

Bring in a minimum of 10 canned food items to Parking Services headquarters, 100 E. Bryan St., and one parking citation will be excused. Any accumulated late fees on that citation will be excused as well. If you have a citation on another vehicle, bring in another 10 canned food items to get that ticket excused as well.

Acceptable canned foods include:
• Peanut butter• Canned meat and protein such as canned ravioli, chicken, ham, tuna, meat spreads, etc.
• Beef stew and soup• Canned vegetables such as beans, peas, carrots and corn

Please check expiration dates on all items before donating; expired items will not be accepted.

Food for Fines is part of the City’s annual Great Savannah Canned Food Drive to help stock the shelves at America’s Second Harvest. Every year the City’s Food Drive comprises one of the largest donations of the year to America’s Second Harvest.

This isn’t the only incentive Parking Services is offering this holiday season. Through the end of the year, the first three hours of parking is FREE every Thursday and Friday in any City parking garage. For more information, go to www.savannahga.gov/parking.
