July 2020 Responses
SAVANNAH, GA (Monday, August 3, 2020) – During the Month of July, the Savannah Fire Department responded to more than 643 incidents including 82 fires, 1 excessive heat incident, 204 emergency medical service and rescues, 63 hazardous condition calls, 22 public service calls, 55 smoke scare calls and 216 false alarms. Of the 82 fires, 11 were structure fires. Below is a detailed summary of the notable calls for service in June:

7:57 p.m.
Elevator Rescue, 100 Block of E. Congress St.
Units rescued four people trapped inside a stalled parking garage elevator. No one was injured.

1:03 a.m.
Vehicle Extrication, West Bound I-16 at Dean Forest Road
Units responded to the report of an accident involving a semi-truck that rolled over. Firefighters discovered the driver trapped inside. The driver was stabilized while firefighters opened the driver’s side door to remove him. The driver was transported by EMS to an area hospital. Crews then contained a diesel fuel spill from the tractor saddle tank.

Gas Leak, W. Victory Drive and Jefferson Street
Firefighters responded to the report of a gas leak. They discovered a half-inch gas line had been cut by construction workers. Firefighters blocked off the surrounding area and stood by until the gas company mitigated the issue.

Downed Power line, 2200 Block of Walz Drive
Firefighters were dispatched to a downed power line. They discovered an arcing power line in the rear of a residence. Firefighters used a hand line to cool off burning brush in the yard and stood by until Georgia Power mitigated the issue.

Fire, 100 Block of Juniper Circle
Firefighters responded to the report of a structure fire. They discovered a single-story brick home with smoke and flames streaming from a back window. The residents, who safely escaped on their own, reported that a six-year-old child started the fire while playing with a lighter. Fast acting firefighters extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading throughout the house. However, the structure sustained significant damage. Power was cut and the residents were displaced.

Unauthorized Burn, Truman Parkway at East President Street
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a fire. They discovered a barrel with fabric and other materials burning near a homeless camp under the overpass. Firefighters used water extinguishers to put out the fire.

False Alarm, 2100 Block of E. DeRenne Avenue
Firefighters were dispatched to a fire alarm at a behavioral health facility. Upon arrival they were informed that a patient intentionally activated the alarm.

Fire, 2100 Block of Brentwood Drive
Units responded to the report of a structure fire. They discovered smoke and flames coming from a single-story residence. Because a large amount of live ammunition was stored inside, firefighters attacked the fire defensively. Once they had knocked down the flames, firefighters entered the building to completely extinguish the fire. The homeowner sustained serious burns and was transported to the Augusta Burn Center for treatment. His cat died in the fire. Firefighters rescued a small kitten from debris outside the structure.

Fire, 2200 Block of E. 60th Street
Firefighters were dispatched to an open area fire. They discovered grass and a section of fence on fire, which they quickly extinguished.

Fire, 0 Block of Dyches Drive
Units responded to the report of a fire. They discovered helium balloons made contact with power lines at the rear of a house. The balloons caught fire and ignited a grassy area below. Firefighters used a water tank to extinguish the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby structures.

Fire, 100 Block of Edgewater Road
Firefighters responded to a reported apartment fire. They discovered light smoke in an apartment kitchen. A fire on the stove, which the resident said malfunctions, had burned itself out. Firefighters checked for hot spots. No one was injured, but power was cut, and six people were displaced.

Public Service, E. President and Lincoln Streets
Units responded to the report of a child locked in a car. They discovered a toddler in the back seat of a locked car. Firefighters gained entry and freed the child.

Car Fire, John Carter Road and Ted Newton Road
Firefighters were dispatched to a car fire. They discovered a fully engulfed car and quickly extinguished it.

Arching Electrical Equipment, 1300 Chatham Parkway
Units were dispatched to the report of a fire. There was no fire when they arrived at a three-story apartment complex, but they did discover unsafe conditions caused by a broken water pipe. The broken pipe caused heavy water damage in one apartment. Water seeped into light fixtures and damaged the drywall. Power to the apartment was cut and the resident was displaced.

Fire, 1000 Block of E. 33rd Street
Firefighters responded to a structure fire at a single-story structure. They worked quickly to extinguish a fire in a kitchen and dining area. They home sustained smoke damage throughout and power was cut. Two people were displaced. No one was physically injured.

Public Service, 12000 Block of Middleground Road
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a water leak at an apartment complex. A resident in a downstairs unit said water had been dripping through the ceiling for 24 hours and the apartment manager could not be reached. Firefighters discovered that the upstairs unit was unlocked. They entered and found that the toilet had been tampered with, causing the fill tube to spray out of thank. Firefighters turned off the water at the toilet shut off valve.

Vehicle Extrication, Dean Forest Road and Sonny Perdue Drive
Units were dispatched to an accident with injuries. Firefighters discovered a motorist whose ankle was trapped beneath the gas pedal. Fighters used extrication tools to rescue the patient, then packaged the patient for transport to an area hospital for treatment.

Downed Power Line, 200 Block of E. Lathrop
Firefighters responded to the report of a downed power line. A resident said he ran over a line while mowing the lawn, which caused it to start sparking. Firefighters established a save zone away from the damaged line and stood by until Georgia Power mitigated the issue.

Fire, 2300 Block of Montgomery Street
Units were dispatched to a fire. Firefighters discovered smoke and flames coming from a car wash. They quickly extinguished a fire concentrated in an area where cleaning supplies and a gas can were stored. No one was injured.

Trash Fire, 400 Block of W. Wayne Street
Firefighters responding to an open area fire found a couch cushion burning next to a structure. They quickly extinguished the fire, preventing any damage to the structure.

Carbon Monoxide Incident, 100 Block of Spring Lakes Drive
Firefighters were dispatched to a residential Carbon Monoxide alarm. They arrived at an apartment complex to find elevated carbon monoxide levels near a bathroom inside one of the units. The resident said he had been using a hookah machine to smoke. Firefighters ventilated the apartment until air level readings were safe.

Vehicle Extrication, E. 60th and Abercorn streets
Firefighters were dispatched to an accident with injuries. They discovered a two-vehicle accident with one person entrapped. Firefighters used extrication tools to rescue the motorist. They also contained a gasoline spill from the wreck. The motorist was transported by EMS to a local hospital.

Vehicle Extrication, Mills B. Lane Boulevard and Rockdale Street
Firefighters were dispatched to an incident involving a vehicle that crashed into an unoccupied building. Firefighters safely assisted the motorist out of the vehicle.

Outside Equipment Fire, 2100 Block of Benton Boulevard
Units responded to the report of a fire near an apartment building. Firefighters discovered a grill burning out of control near a gazebo. They shut off the propane tank line to the grill and put out the fire. No one was injured.

Grass Fire, 0 Block of Yvette J. Hagins Drive
Firefighters were dispatched to a fire alarm at a hotel. They discovered smoke and flames coming from a flower bed near the building. The fire in the flower bed caused a back flow preventer cover to burn. Firefighters extinguished the fire and ventilated the building.

Fire, 3200 Block of College Street
Units responded to the report of a structure fire at university campus. They arrived on scene to find that a maintenance worker had extinguished a fire in a microwave and cabinets. Firefighters ventilated the building and made sure the fire was completely out. No one was injured.

4:25 p.m.
Fire, 600 Block of South Street
Units responded to the report of a vehicle fire near a structure. On scene they discovered a fully involved SUV. Flames from the car fire had spread to the eaves of the nearby structure. Fast acting crews extinguished the fire before it spread to the attic. The car fire melted the electrical meter, so power to the home was cut. No one was physically injured, but the residents were displaced. A family friend was working on the SUV parked beside the home when the fire began.

Vehicle Extrication, 13300 Block of Coffee Bluff Road
Firefighters were dispatched to an accident involving a vehicle that struck a power pole. Firefighters stood by until Georgia Power cut power to the pole. Firefighters then removed the front passenger side door to access the victim.

Public Service, Jefferson Street and W. Oglethorpe Avenue
Units responded to a public service call involving a semi-truck that struck a large oak tree limb. The tree limb fell on top of the semi-truck and was blocking traffic. Firefighters used a chain saw to remove the tree limb.

Fire, 700 Block of W. 50th Street
Firefighters responded to a residential structure for the report of a fire. They discovered an arching electrical outlet. Fire and heat traveled up the wall about five feet. Firefighters isolated power to the room and made sure the fire was completely out.

Fire, 1900 Block of Causton Bluff Road
Units were dispatched to a structure fire. Firefighters discovered fire in a vacant structure. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, which had burned through the floor and damaged areas beneath the house.

Water Leak, 500 Block of E. 38th Street
Firefighters responded to and alarm at an apartment complex. They discovered that water from an overflowing toilet was seeping into an apartment below. The water flow activated the alarm. Firefighters entered the apartment with the leak and woke the sleeping occupant. They cut water to the toilet and mitigated the alarm issue.

Fire, 1000 Block of Shawnee Street
Units responded to a fire alarm at an apartment building. They discovered light smoke inside the laundry room where fire was burning inside a dryer lint trap. Firefighters extinguished the fire and ventilated the building.

Fire, 1000 Block of Love Street
The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire. Firefighters discovered light smoke streaming from a single-story apartment building. They quickly extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to the adjoining unit. Power to both units was cut, and smoke alarms were installed.

Fire, 11400 Block of White Bluff Road
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a tree on fire in an apartment complex. Residents said a firework landed near a tree and started a fire. Firefighters discovered small embers near dry moss. They doused the area with water to make sure the fire was completely out.
