August 2020 Fires

August 2020 Responses

SAVANNAH, GA (Friday, September 18, 2020) – During the Month of August the Savannah Fire Department responded to more than 624 incidents including 66 fires, 224 emergency medical service and rescue calls, 54 hazardous condition calls, 20 public service calls, 45 smoke scare calls and 215 false alarms. Of the 66 fires, 14 were structure fires. Below is a detailed summary of the notable calls for service in August:

August 31, 2020

8:10 p.m.

Accident with injuries, Lincoln Street and Park Avenue

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a bicyclist struck by a car. They assessed the injuries, initiated care, then transferred the bicyclist to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

August 31, 2020

6:20 p.m.

Fire, 6300 Block of Chief O.F. Love Drive

Units responded to the report of a kitchen fire. They discovered that the resident burned a pot of food on the stove. The fire was out upon their arrival. They checked for hot spots and cleared smoke from the home. No one was injured.

August 31, 2020

1:18 p.m.

Fire, 1100 Block of East 54th Street

Units responded to the report of a structure fire at a duplex. Upon their arrival, heavy smoke was streaming from the roof line. In one of the units they discovered that burners had been left on in the kitchen and fires were burning in the bedroom and hallway. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fires and cut power to the building. A large dog found in the back of the home was turned over to Animal Control. The residents of the damaged unit could not be reached. Two people living in the adjoining unit were displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

9:51 p.m.

Fire, 2100 Block of Benton Boulevard

Savannah Fire responded to an open area fire at an apartment complex. A maintenance worker on scene said he had extinguished a small fire on a patio chair. Firefighters checked for hot spots.

10:47 p.m.

Public Service, 900 Block of Mohawk Street

Units were dispatched to rescue a citizen who became trapped when a fallen tree limb blocked their apartment door. Firefighters removed the tree limb. No one was injured.

10:34 p.m.

Overheated Motor, 100 Block of Compass Point Drive

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire alarm at a university dormitory. There was no fire, but they discovered an overheated washing machine causing a light haze and electrical smell inside the laundry room. No one was injured.

11:28 a.m.

Fire, 100 Block of Hampstead Avenue

Firefighters responded to an alarm at a residential high rise. They discovered a cooking fire in one of the units. The fire, which spread from the stove to the cabinets, was fully extinguished. The structure was cleared of smoke. A resident who inhaled smoke and another who fell while exiting the building were treated by EMS and transported to a local hospital.

11:27 p.m.

Fire, 700 Block of Drayton Street

Savannah Fire responded to the report of a fire at a hotel. Guests were outside the structure when they arrived. Firefighters discovered a light haze on the first floor and heavy smoke in one of the rooms. They entered the room and quickly extinguished a fire. No one was injured.

Elevator Rescue, 400 Block of West River Street

Units used an attic ladder to rescue four people trapped inside a stalled elevator.

3:38 p.m.

Accident with Injuries, 1900 Block of Eisenhower Drive

Firefighters were dispatched to a traffic accident with injuries. The driver of one of the vehicles was experiencing a medical emergency. Firefighters initiated care then transferred the driver to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

2:17 a.m.

Car Fire, 300 Block of Montclair Boulevard

Firefighters responded to the report of a vehicle fire. The vehicle owner said he found a small fire in the bed of his truck and doused it with an extinguisher. Firefighters made sure the blaze was completely out.

10:33 p.m.

Elevator Rescue, 400 Block of West River Street

Units rescued four people from a stalled elevator. No one was injured.

Water Leak, 500 Block of Pennsylvania Avenue

Firefighters responded to the report of a water leak at a residential building. They discovered water leaking from the ceiling and on to an electric water heater. Power to the water heater was cut and building maintenance workers were contacted.

7:53 p.m.

Overheated HVAC System, 7800 Block of Abercorn Street

Units responded to the report of a possible structure fire at a shopping mall. They discovered the smell of smoke outside a clothing store and located an overheated air conditioning unit on the roof. Power to the unit was cut. No one was injured.

2:36 p.m.

Accident with Injuries, Westbound I-16 at Exit 164

Firefighters were leaving the scene of a car fire on I-16 when they were dispatched to a motorcycle crash nearby. The discovered a motorcycle on the ground and an injured driver. Firefighters treated and dressed the driver’s wounds then transferred the driver to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

August 28, 2020

9:33 a.m.

Technical Rescue, 600 Block of Indian Street

Firefighters were dispatched to perform a technical rescue. They discovered a man hanging from a garage door. The man’s arm became entrapped when the garage door rolled up. Several firefighters provided patient care while others quickly disassembled the door and freed his arm.

5:22 p.m.

Open Area Fire, 1300 Block of Exley Street

Firefighters responded to an open area fire in a playground. They quickly extinguished the fire and made sure there were no hidden hot spots. No one was injured.

10:11 a.m.

Fire, 10300 Block of Middleground Road

Units responded to a mobile home fire. Flames were streaming from the front of the single wide structure when firefighters arrived on scene. Several crews forced entry and extinguished the fire, while others searched for pets that were known to be inside. Two cats and a dog were removed from the structure. Each pet was unresponsive, and firefighters were unable to revive them.

Overheated HVAC System, 400 Block of Goebel Avenue

Units responded to an alarm at an elementary school. They discovered a haze caused by an overheated air conditioning unit on the roof. They cut power to the air conditioning unit and ventilated the structure. No one was physically injured.

Dumpster Fire, 7800 Block of Abercorn Street  

Savannah Firefighters extinguished a dumpster fire at a shopping mall.

Smoke Scare, 200 Block of Police Memorial Drive  

Units were dispatched to a reported structure fire at a county government building. On scene they discovered the smell of burnt food and a light haze in the break room, but no fire. Firefighters cleared the smoke from the building.

1:21 p.m.

Mutual Aid, Northbound I-95, Pooler

Savannah Firefighters were called to assist Pooler Fire Department with a jack-knifed tractor trailer that was leaking fuel from a ruptured tank. Savannah Fire units sealed a one-by-five-inch gash in the tank.

Accident with Injuries, West Broughton and Whitaker Streets

Firefighters were dispatched to an accident involving a bicyclist that struck a vehicle. Firefighters initiated patient care then transferred the bicyclist to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

Elevator Rescue, 200 Block of West Broughton streets  

A unit was dispatched to rescue an individual trapped inside a stalled elevator.

9:40 a.m.

Gas leak, East 49th Street and Skidaway Road  

Firefighters were dispatched to a gas leak. Workers said they struck a gas line while digging. Firefighters called the gas company to the scene and created a safe zone until the issue was mitigated.

2:25 p.m.

Medical Emergency, MLK Boulevard and West Oglethorpe Avenue

While driving through their service area, firefighters discovered an unconscious person on the sidewalk. They initiated patient care then transferred the individual to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

6:31 p.m.

Medical Emergency, 3000 Block of Liberty Parkway  

A citizen walked up to firefighters at Station 6 complaining of chest pain and difficulty breathing.  Firefighters initiated patient care then transferred the citizen to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

Gasoline Spill, Jimmy Deloach Parkway and Benton Boulevard  

Units responded to an accident and fluid spill involving a wrecked semi-truck. Firefighters built a dam out of dirt and absorbent pads to prevent the fuel from spilling into a nearby drainage ditch.

Mutual Aid, Tybee Beach  

Firefighters from the Marine Unit were called to assist the US Coast Guard and Department of Natural Resources with a search for a missing swimmer.

9:41 p.m.

Cooking Fire, 0 Block of Stephen S. Green Drive

Savannah Fire Units were dispatched to an alarm at a hotel. They discovered a cooking fire in one of the rooms. The hotel guest said he burned burritos in the microwave.  Firefighters ventilated the building and made sure the fire was completely out.

3:59 p.m.

Medical Emergency, 2400 Block of Augusta Avenue  

A citizen in respiratory distress came to Fire Station 4 for help. The citizen reported they were having an asthma attack and had run out of medication. Firefighters stabilized the citizen then transferred them to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

2:40 p.m.

Yard Waste Fire, 0 Block of Birchwood Cove

Units were dispatched to the report of a fire somewhere in the 700 Block of Birchwood Cove. They discovered a resident in the 0 Block of Birchwood Cove burning yard waste. The resident was asked to extinguish the fire and firefighters explained the ordinance, which bans burning within the City limits.

Rubbish Fire, 3600 Block of Duane Court

Firefighters happened upon a small rubbish fire in an apartment complex. They quickly extinguished a pile of clothes that was burning just outside the door of one of the units. No one was injured.

Accident with Injuries, Northbound I-516 at Northbound Veterans Parkway

Firefighters were dispatched to an accident involving a car that rolled over. The driver complained of a head injury. Firefighters initiated care then transferred the driver to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

Fire, 1900 Block of East 52nd Street

Firefighters were dispatched to a residential structure fire. They arrived on scene to discover heavy flames coming through the roof of a storage building. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire. Power to the building was cut and the cause is under investigation.

7:35 p.m.

Public Service, 200 Block of Highlands Boulevard

Crews were dispatched to rescue a person locked inside the gate of a community pool.

Elevator Rescue, 200 Block of West River Street

Units rescued six people who were trapped inside a hotel elevator. The elevator stalled on the sixth floor. No one was injured.

12:48 p.m.

Water Rescue, Savannah River

Firefighters in the Marine Unit were training on the Savannah River when they happened upon a stranded pontoon boat. The stranded people were being helped by other boaters. Firefighters stood by until all made it safely to the dock.

8:44 a.m.

Fire, 300 Block of East Victory Drive

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire at a vacant structure. They discovered fire on a mattress and some clothing located on the front porch.  Witnesses said they saw the person who started the fire. The fire was extinguished, and a fire investigator was called to the scene.

Fire, 0 Block of Barnard Street

Savannah Fire responded to the report of a fire at a bar. Firefighters discovered a fire in a storage closet that had been extinguished by the sprinkler system. The cause is under investigation. No one was injured.

12:14 p.m.

Fire, 9400 Block of Abercorn Street

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at an apartment building. A fuel tank being used by welders leaked and caught fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire, cooled the tank and stopped the leak. No one was injured.  

August 19, 2020

10:26 p.m.

Arching Electrical Equipment, 10700 Block of Abercorn Street

Firefighters responded to the report of smoke inside an apartment. The residents said the oven made a popping sound and began to smoke. Then the electricity went out in the apartment.  Firefighters discovered that the oven fuse and main apartment fuse were tripped.  Power was restored to the apartment and the occupant was advised not to use the oven until an electrician identified the issue.

6:29 p.m.

Accident with Injuries, East Henry and Habersham streets

Firefighters were dispatched to a crash involving three vehicles. One motorist had a broken wrist. Firefighters initiated basic care, called for EMS and mitigated potential hazards from the wrecked vehicles.

9:39 a.m.

Fire, 1000 Block of Shawnee Street

Units were dispatched to the report of an apartment fire. On scene they discovered a basket of charred clothing that had been sprayed with a dry chemical fire extinguisher. The resident said he went to bed after doing laundry and awoke to find a small fire in the laundry basket. Firefighters made sure the blaze was fully extinguished.

2:40 p.m.

Medical Emergency,1400 Block of East Victory Drive

Units were dispatched to a park pond for the report of a drowning. They initiated patient care and CPR then transferred the patient to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

Oil Spill, 0 Block of West Bay Lane

Firefighters were dispatched to a fluid spill. They worked to prevent the oil from entering storm drains, notified Risk Management and requested a sand truck for cleanup.

10:43 a.m.

Elevator Rescue, 0 Block of East Taylor Street

Savannah Fire responded to an elevator rescue call. Two injured people were trapped inside an elevator, which had fallen from an unknown height and crashed at ground level. Firefighters rescued the victims and transferred patient care over to EMS.

9:18 p.m.

Medical Emergency, Fire Station 14, 400 Block of Highlands Drive

A citizen walked up to Fire Station 14 requesting medical attention for a cut that occurred while preparing food. The individual had a deep laceration on their thumb and middle finger.  Firefighters provided first aid. The individual refused EMS and said they would drive themselves to the hospital.

9:18 p.m.

Vehicle Fire, Northbound I-95 at Exit 106

Savannah Fire units responded a vehicle fire. They found a car, which ran off the road and rolled over. It was heavily engulfed in flames. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and turned the scene over to Savannah Police and Georgia State Patrol.

Fire, 0 Block of West Montgomery Cross Road

Units responded to an alarm. They discovered light smoke coming from a metal commercial building. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire preventing significant spread.

Vehicle Extrication, 1100 Block of East DeRenne Avenue

Firefighters responded to the report of a hit and run with injuries. They discovered two people inside a vehicle. One complained of injuries. Firefighters initiated patient care and used extrication tools to remove the driver and passenger. Then they transferred the individuals to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

11:46 a.m.

Overheated HVAC System, 0 Block of East Liberty Street

Firefighters were dispatched to an alarm at a hotel. They discovered a light haze in the ballroom caused by an overheated air conditioner motor. Power to the unit was cut and the building was cleared of smoke.

Fire, 2100 Block of Texas Avenue

Firefighters were dispatched to a reported kitchen fire.  The discovered a pot had burned on the stove but was out upon their arrival. There was fire damage on the top of the stove, hood vent and the microwave cord. They made sure the fire was completely out and cleared the smoke from the building.

Fire, 800 Block of Drayton Street

Units responding to the report of a structure fire discovered an extension cord caused a futon mattress to catch fire.  The resident had used an extinguisher to put out the fire. Firefighters made sure the fire was completely out and removed the mattress.

Gas Leak, 100 Block of East Broughton Street

Firefighters responded to a gas leak at a hotel. Employees and guests were assisted out of the structure and sheltered in a safe place.  Units found a gas leak coming from the kitchen stove. Gas to the structure was cut and the building was ventilated. Firefighters made sure there were no leaks in the adjoining structure and contacted the gas company to make repairs.

Fire, 1400 Block of Church Street

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a structure fire. Firefighters discovered a light haze caused by a smoldering electrical line and insulation in the attic. They removed the main fuse and flammable materials from around the power box. Georgia Power was called to cut power to the structure.

Mutual Aid, Port Wentworth Fire, 0 Block of Braxton Manor Drive

Savannah Fire was called to assist the Port Wentworth Fire Department with a structure fire. Savannah Firefighters arrived to find a house fully engulfed in flames. They helped Port Wentworth crews extinguish the structure and two cars parked in the driveway.

Accident with Injuries, MLK Boulevard and West 46th Street

Firefighters were dispatched to a multi-vehicle accident with injuries.  The driver was unresponsive. Firefighters initiated patient care until the driver regained consciousness. They transferred the driver to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

Defective Wiring, 1400 Block of Augusta Avenue

Savannah Fire responded to a fire alarm at a residence. They discovered a worn and smoking extension cord had triggered the alarm. Crews removed the cord and checked for hot spots.

Rubbish Fire, 1400 Block of East Victory Drive

Fire fighters were dispatched to the report of fires in a park. They encountered an agitated individual who was lighting trash on fire. Firefighters explained the potential danger and the City’s burn ordinance. The individual pushed the fire into the fountain and the scene was turned over to Savannah Police

Medical Emergency, 8000 Block of Chatham Center Drive

Firefighters responding to an automobile accident with injuries discovered an unresponsive person in the street. Firefighters initiated patient care then transferred the individual to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

1:57 p.m.

Vehicle Extrication, Stiles Avenue and Bel Air Drive

Units were dispatched to a vehicle extrication. They discovered a two-vehicle accident with one injured person entrapped. Firefighters initiated patient care while extricating the victim. Once rescued from the wreckage, the patient was turned over to EMS for care and transport to a local hospital.

August 1, 2020

7:05 p.m.

Good Intent Call, Savannah River

The Marine Unit was approached by a boater who said an individual fell out of a boat on the Savannah River and was run over by a vessel full of intoxicated passengers. Marine Unit firefighters located the boar near the Talmadge Bridge. None of the passengers reported injuries.
