September 2020 Responses
SAVANNAH, GA (Monday, October 19, 2020) – During the Month of September the Savannah Fire Department responded to more than 630 incidents including 58 fires, 2 excessive heat incidents, 226 emergency medical service and rescue calls, 62 hazardous condition calls, 29 public service calls, 45 smoke scare calls and 204 false alarms. Of the 58 fires, 15 were structure fires. Below is a detailed summary of the notable calls for service in September:

2:14 p.m.
Water Search, East President Street at North Truman Parkway
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a possible drowning in a canal. The Technical Rescue Team searched the water and found no evidence to substantiate the report.

Fire, 0 Block of Artley Road
Firefighters responded to the report of a fire at a warehouse. They discovered a smoldering fire in an industrial hopper used to load sawdust into transport containers. Crews worked for more than an hour to ensure that the fire was completely out in the hopper and a transport container. No one was physically injured.

Gas Leak, 1000 Block of E. Gwinnett Street
Firefighters responded to a gas leak call. They discovered that a construction worker accidentally damaged a gas line. Firefighters cleared the area and remained on scene until the gas company mitigated the issue.

Carbon Monoxide Incident, 1400 Block of E. 49th Street
Units responded to the report of a carbon monoxide alarm. The resident said she was baking and smelled something odd before the alarm went off. Firefighters monitored the air and discovered elevated carbon monoxide levels inside the home. The oven was identified as the source of the problem. The resident was advised to have the oven professionally repaired before using.

Vehicle Accident, East President Street at Pennsylvania Avenue
Units responded to an accident involving an automobile and a moped. The moped driver was unconscious. Firefighters worked with EMS to treat the moped driver’s wounds before packaging the driver for transport to the hospital.

Elevator Rescue, East Congress & Drayton streets
Firefighters responded to the report of a stalled elevator. Firefighters opened the elevator doors and rescued 12 adults and three children. Power to the elevator was cut and maintenance was notified.

Elevator Rescue, 100 Block of E. Congress Street
Firefighters responded to a stalled elevator call at a parking garage. They discovered 12 people trapped inside and rescued them. One person was treated for shortness of breath. The elevator was secured, and maintenance was notified.

Smoke Scare, 1000 Block of Dutchtown Road
Firefighters responded to the report of a burning smell in an apartment bathroom. Firefighters discovered a plug-in air freshener causing the smell. The air freshener was removed.

A citizen alerted firefighters at Station 5 to a smoking trash can nearby. Firefighters discovered a smoldering backpack inside the trash can. They extinguished it with a water can and turned the scene over to Savannah Police.

Fire, 400 Block of Washington Avenue
The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at a residence. The resident informed them that she was burning old paint off a window when it began to smoke. She used an extinguisher to smother out the smoldering window frame. Firefighters checked for hot spots and made sure the fire was completely out.

Vehicle Extrication, 200 Block of W. Montgomery Crossroad
Savannah Fire units responded to the report of an overturned vehicle. They discovered a two-car crash with one vehicle on its side. Two people were trapped inside. Firefighters stabilized the car and rescued the victims.

Firefighters responding to a residential fire discovered flames coming from the garage. They quickly extinguished the fire inside the building and attic.

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a structure fire. On scene they discovered that the oven caught fire, but it was extinguished by the residents. Firefighters ventilated the home then checked for hotspots and other potential hazards.

Open Area Fire, 12500 Block of Kingwood Drive
Firefighters were dispatched to an open area fire. They discovered that a homeowner was burning leaves in a backyard fire pit. The homeowner extinguished the fire and firefighters explained the ordinance, which prohibits yard waste fires in the City limits.

Firefighters were called to assist EMS units with a citizen who fell in the bathroom and was unable to get up. Firefighters forced entry to the locked home and turned patient care over to EMS.

Vehicle extrication, Eastbound I-16 at Gwinnett Street
Savannah Fire units were dispatched to a vehicle accident. They discovered an unresponsive driver trapped inside a wrecked vehicle. Firefighters initiated care, extricated the driver and turned the patient over to EMS.

Hazardous condition, 500 Block of E. Liberty St.
Units were dispatched to a homeless outreach facility for the report of a kitchen fire. They discovered a small area on the countertop that was charred. The charring was caused by excessive heat from oven. There was no fire. Firefighters cut power to the oven, checked for hot spots and advised the staff to have the oven repaired by a professional before using.

Fuel spill, 1100 Block of E. 38th Street
Firefighters were dispatched to report of a hazardous materials spill. They discovered that machinery used to install power poles turned over and damaged two vehicles. The machine was leaking gas and hydraulic fluid. Firefighters contained the spill while power company officials cleared the damaged machinery.

Transport Vehicle Fire, 600 Block of E. Lathrop Avenue
Firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle fire. They discovered a fully loaded diesel fuel tanker truck on the side of the road. The driver had used a fire extinguisher to put out a small engine compartment fire. Firefighters monitored the engine compartment temperature and stood by until the truck was hauled away.

Firefighters responded to the report of a residential fire. They discovered a dryer fire in the laundry room. The fire was extinguished, and the dryer was removed.

Savannah Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire. Firefighters discovered a resident grilling on the porch of his home. They advised the resident of the ordinance requiring grills to be used at a safe distance away from buildings.

Savannah Fire units were dispatched to a carbon monoxide alarm. However, air meter readings were normal. They discovered that the alarm was beeping because the battery was low.

The Savannah Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire. Firefighters discovered that a plastic container had melted and burned inside the oven. They removed the container and ventilated the structure.

Vehicle extrication, E. President Street and Southbound Harry Truman Parkway
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of an overturned vehicle in a body of water. On scene firefighters discovered a two-car accident. One vehicle was on its side and partially submerged. Two people were trapped inside. Firefighters used a ladder to remove the trapped individuals and provided patient care.

Fire, 600 Block of W. 40th Street
Units responded to the report of a structure fire but saw no signs of smoke or fire. The homeowners informed them that a faint smoke smell was coming from the attic. Firefighters discovered smoldering insulation fire around an attic light. Firefighters extinguished the fire and power to the structure was cut. The residents were displaced.

Firefighters were dispatched to a restaurant cooking fire. They discovered that an employee had extinguished a fire in a fryer. Firefighters cut power to the affected area and notified the Fire Marshal and the Health Department.

Police Matter, East Oglethorpe and Abercorn Streets
Firefighters were outside Station 3 when they noticed a driver passed out behind the wheel at the corner of Oglethorpe and Abercorn. The driver did not respond when firefighters banged on the window. They were able to enter the car and remove the keys from the ignition. Firefighters assessed the driver’s condition and turned the scene over to Savannah Police.

Unintentional Sprinkler activation, 200 Block of W. Victory Drive
Units were dispatched for a reported fire alarm at a college dormitory. Firefighters discovered a water leak that triggered the alarm. The property was placed on fire watch and the scene was turned over to maintenance for repairs.

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to a dryer fire. Firefighters unplugged the dryer and removed a smoldering towel that had fallen behind the dryer and overheated. They checked for hot spots and ventilated the building.

Firefighters were dispatched to an accident involving a car and a motorcycle. Two people were injured when the motorcycle driver swerved to avoid colliding with the car. Firefighters provided patient care.

Elevator Rescue, 500 Block of W. River Street
Firefighters were dispatched to an elevator rescue. They found an elevator car stuck between the second and third floors. Firefighters made access to the passengers through the roof of the elevator car and rescued 13 adults.

Firefighters dispatched to an apartment discovered that a lit cigarette had fallen onto a mop and caused a smoldering fire. Firefighters extinguished the mop and cleared the smoke from the apartment.

Fire, 0 Block of Clyde E. Martin Drive
Firefighters were dispatched to an alarm activation at a hotel. Upon arrival they smelled smoke in the mechanical room. After gaining entry they were told that a plumbing company had damaged a freon line. A maintenance employee tried to repair it and accidentally set fire to insulation and studs in the wall. Staff used wet rags to put the fire out. Firefighters checked for hot spots and contacted the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Units were dispatched to rescue victims form a hospital parking garage elevator.

Overheated Motor, 13100 Block of Abercorn Street
Firefighters responded to the report of a fire at a fast food restaurant. They discovered a light haze in the lobby and sheltered all customers and employees in a safe place nearby. Firefighters determined that a rooftop air conditioning unit overheated.

Carbon Dioxide Leak, 300 Block of Mall Boulevard
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a carbon dioxide leak at a restaurant. Firefighters discovered a leaky carbon dioxide valve and shut it off. The restaurant staff was advised to make repairs before reopening.

Public Service, 374 N. Lathrop Ave.
Savannah Fire Hazmat units responded to the report of a toxic smell coming from the sewer. They discovered elevated gas levels. Firefighters removed the manhole cover to ventilate the sewer and returned the gas levels to normal. They also contacted City Maintenance crews and alerted them to the issue.

Units were dispatched to a fire alarm at a residence. Upon their arrival the homeowner reported that she was heating incense oils on the stove and started a fire. The fire was out, but firefighters checked for hot spots.

The Savannah Fire Department was called to provide mutual aid to Chatham Fire and Emergency Services. Savannah Firefighters arrived on scene to find a fully involved commercial building. Units were assigned to assist with fire suppression.

Units were dispatched to a vehicle fire. Firefighters discovered a fully engulfed vehicle in a driveway. The flames had spread to the rear of a second car parked nearby. Firefighters extinguished the fire.

Public Service, 600 Block of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard
Savannah Firefighters were dispatched to a partial roof collapse at a grocery store. They discovered clogged scuppers on the roof, which may have caused the collapse after a heavy rain. Units ensured that power was cut and called Building Services to the scene. The Building Services Inspector deemed the structure unsafe and informed the owners that repairs were required.

Fire, 2500 Block of Mississippi Avenue
Units responded to the report of a structure fire. Residents said they woke up to find a cable box on fire and used water to extinguish the fire. Firefighters removed the charred cable box and checked for hot spots. They also warned the residents of the dangers related to the extension cords being used throughout the house.

Downed Powerline, 0 Block of E. 39th Street
The Savannah Fire Department was called to the scene of a house that was damaged by a fallen tree. Firefighters evacuated occupants from the structure and made sure power was cut. The tree took down power lines, pierced the first-floor ceiling and caused extensive damage to the first floor and second floor porch.

The Savannah Fire Department responded to the report of an open area fire. Units discovered a tree limb fell in a roadway and caused a power line to land on a commercial building. Light smoke was coming from the roof. Power was cut and firefighters extinguished fire between the ceiling and roof line.

Firefighters were called to assist an unconscious person in a public square. Units discovered an individual lying on a bench. The individual was conscious and alert, but family members said the individual had passed out earlier. Firefighters provided patient care then turned the scene over to EMS.

Units responded to the report of a structure fire. Firefighters discovered heavy smoke coming from a residential structure. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, preventing it from extending beyond a laundry room. Power was cut and four people were displaced.

Units were dispatched to the report of a fire at a community center. Firefighters discovered a smoking hot water heater. Firefighters cut gas to the unit and secured a leak at the valve. A City maintenance crew was on site to make repairs.

Animal Rescue, 100 Block of W. 31st Street
Savannah Fire was dispatched to a residence to rescue a dog. The homeowner put a dog in a running tub to give it a bath. The homeowner stepped out of the bathroom for a moment and closed the bathroom door behind them. But the doorknob fell off, locking the dog inside. Firefighters pried the door open and rescued the dog.
