December 2020 Responses

 

SAVANNAH, GA (Monday, January 4, 2021) – During the Month of December, the Savannah Fire Department responded to more than 871 incidents including 65 fires, 377 emergency medical service and rescue calls, 55 hazardous condition, 40 public service and other calls, 108 smoke scare calls and 226 false alarms. Of the 14 fires, 6 were structure fires. Below is a detailed summary of the notable calls for service in December:

 

December 29, 2020

6:48 p.m.

Dryer Fire, 200 Block of West Montgomery Crossroad 

The Savannah Fire Department responded to the report of a structure fire at an apartment complex laundry room. On scene firefighters discovered smoke coming from a dryer. Prior to their arrival, a resident used an extinguisher to put out a fire that was caused by a clogged lint pipe and overheated clothing that accumulated around the dryer. Firefighters cooled down the hot spots and checked the neighboring units for extension and cleared smoke from the area. No one was injured or displaced.

 

December 28, 2020

11:33 p.m.

Water Evacuation, 700 Block of Yamacraw Village

Firefighters were dispatched to a flooding issue at a public housing facility. They discovered that a toilet valve and pipe had broken away from the wall of an apartment, causing the upstairs and downstairs rooms to flood. Water to the entire building had to be cut until the plumbing issue was mitigated. The residents of the flooded apartment were displaced. The Housing Authority was notified. 

 

December 28, 2020

6:31 p.m.

EMS Call, 900 Block of West 46th Street

Savannah Firefighters were dispatched to a medical emergency involving a stabbing. On scene they discovered an individual with a small laceration on their face. Firefighters provided patient care until they were transported to a local hospital by EMS.

6:02 p.m.

Carbon Monoxide Incident, 100 Block of Spring Lakes Drive

Savannah Firefighters were dispatched to a carbon monoxide alarm at an apartment complex. They detected elevated carbon monoxide levels in an apartment and discovered that a hot grill had been stored inside the garage. Firefighters removed the grill and ventilated the structure to mitigate the issue.

5:12 p.m.

Elevator Rescue, 400 Block of West River Street

Units responded to the report of a stalled elevator at a hotel. They discovered three people trapped in an elevator car on the 6th floor and rescued them using ground ladders.

11:51 p.m.

Electrical Fire, 2200 Block of Bolling Street

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a structure fire at a residence. On scene they discovered a fuse box on fire, which was extinguished with a dry chemical extinguisher.

6:51 p.m.

Medical Emergency Call, 10500 Block of Abercorn Street

Firefighters responded to the report of an unconscious person and provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Medical Emergency Call, 500 Block of West Bay Street

Savannah Fire units were dispatched to the report of an unresponsive person on a bathroom floor. Firefighters provided patient care until EMS arrived on scene. 

 

December 25, 2020

4:40 p.m.

Public Service, 600 Block of East 40th Street

Firefighters were dispatched to an incident involving a person trapped inside a bathroom. They discovered that a doorknob had fallen off and trapped a person inside a second story bathroom. Firefighters gained entry to the building and rescued the resident.

 

December 25, 2020

4:06 p.m.

Public Service, 100 Block of Hampstead Avenue 

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to force entry to an apartment and enable Savannah Police and EMS to gain access to an individual who fell down and was unable to get up on their own. 

 

December 25, 2020

1:55 p.m.

Car Fire, East Perry Lane and Habersham Streets

Units were dispatched to a vehicle on fire. They discovered a burning car in a lane and extinguished it. Firefighters then created an overflow dam to trap leaking fuel.

10:52 a.m.

Medical Emergency, 500 Block of Pennsylvania Avenue

Firefighters were dispatched to a cutting and provided patient care until EMS arrived on scene.

2:40 a.m.

Medical Emergency, 1500 Block of Agate Street

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to a stabbing and provided patient care until EMS arrived.

12:36 a.m.

Dryer Fire, 8400 Block of Waters Avenue

Firefighters responded to the report of a fire at a laundromat. On scene they discovered fire on a washer and dryer. The fire was extinguished, and smoke was cleared from the building. 

 

December 24, 2020

6:54 p.m.

Structural Collapse, 2200 Block of Pecan Drive

Units were dispatched to an emergency at a residence. On scene they discovered a large tree had fallen on the roof, knocked down power lines and pierced through the attic and ceiling in two rooms. Firefighters contacted the Red Cross to assist the displaced residents and called Georgia Power to the scene. 

 

December 24, 2020

5:51 p.m.

Medical Emergency, 3600 Block of Ogeechee Road

Firefighters were dispatched to a stabbing at a motel. They discovered two injured people and provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Medical Emergency, Forsyth Park 

The Savannah Fire Department responded to the report of an unconscious person in the park. They discovered a lethargic individual lying in the park and provided patient care until EMS arrived on scene.

Medical Emergency, 2400 Block of Florida Avenue

Units were dispatched to the report of an unconscious child. Firefighters provided patient care until EMS arrived on scene. 

 

December 23, 2020

8:22 p.m.

Medical Emergency, 2500 Block of Skidaway Road

Firefighters responded to the report of a pregnant woman who collapsed at work and provided patient care until EMS arrived on scene. 

 

December 23, 2020

12:59 a.m.

Fire, 1000 Block of Carver Street  

Units were dispatched to a structure fire. They discovered heavy smoke and flames coming from the rear of a building and the attic. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze. One person was displaced.

 

December 22, 2020

7:19 p.m.

Fuel Spill, 7800 Block of Abercorn

Firefighters responded to the report of a fuel spill at a mall. They discovered a fuel spilling from a pick-up truck and constructed a dam to contain the runoff. The truck owner arrived on scene and said the secondary gas tank pump was inadvertently engaged, which cause the primary tank to overflow. The owner mitigated the issue and firefighters used oil dry and absorbent pads to remove the spill.

7:38 a.m.

Vehicle Extrication, Highlands Boulevard and Rivermoore Court  

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to an accident with injuries. One person was entrapped. Firefighters extricated the motorist and provided patient care.

 

December 19, 2020

5:52 p.m.

Fire, 2300 East 41st Street  

Savannah Firefighters responded to the report of a fire. They extinguished a fire that began when fire spread from a fireplace to a pile of blankets and household items. Firefighters contained the blaze to the rear of the home. No one was physically injured, but the resident was displaced. 

 

December 18, 2020

2:24 a.m.

Vehicle Extrication, Price and 37th Streets 

Units were dispatched to a multi-vehicle accident. One motorist was trapped in the front passenger seat of a vehicle. Firefighters removed the passenger side door and rescued the motorist.

5:52 a.m.

Medical Emergency, 2000 Block of Causton Bluff

Firefighters responding to a medical emergency discovered an unconscious individual. They provided patient care until EMS arrived on scene.

 

December 14, 2020

5:17 p.m.

Fire, 600 Block of West 34th Street  

Units responded to a reported house fire. They acted quickly to extinguish a fire that appears to have originated in a rear bedroom.

 

December 12, 2020

11:52 p.m.

Fire, 0 Block of Sidney Court

Firefighters responded the report of a fire. They discovered smoke coming from a dryer vent on the exterior of a house. The smoke was caused by an arching electrical outlet. Power to the entire house had to be cut because of issues with the electrical system. The resident was displaced as a result.

10:14 a.m.

Electrical Fire, 500 Block of East 60th Street

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to a fire. They discovered an arching electrical outlet that caught fire but was out upon their arrival. Power to the outlet was cut.

3:23 a.m.

Medical Emergency, 4000 Block of Ogeechee Road

Units dispatched to a shooting at a motel provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Medical Emergency, 0 Block of Burbank Boulevard

Firefighters were dispatched to a stabbing and provided patient care until EMS arrived. 

 

December 11, 2020

4:40 p.m.

Vehicle Entrapment, 100 Block of Sebring Place

Units responded to the report of a child with a limb trapped in a bicycle. They discovered that the child was bike riding when their ankle became stuck between the pedal and the bike frame. Firefighters removed the kickstand, which enabled them to disentangle the child.

4:17 p.m.

Medical Emergency, 0 Block of Hidden Lake Court

Firefighters responding to a medical emergency provided patient care to an unconscious individual. The individual was alert and responsive when EMS arrived on scene.

9:07 a.m.

Fire, 2000 Block of East 51st Street

Firefighters were dispatched to a fire. They discovered a recycling bin and fence on fire and extinguished the blaze.  

 

December 8, 2020

11:23 a.m.

Medical Emergency, 11700 Block of Mercy Boulevard

Units responded to the report of a medical emergency outside a hospital emergency room. They discovered an unresponsive individual in a grassy area and provided patient care before the individual was moved into the hospital for treatment.

 

December 7, 2020

7:22 p.m.

HVAC Fire, 100 Block of Quail Forest 

The Savannah Fire Department responded to the report of a fire. They discovered a haze around the HVAC unit and charring around the ductwork. Firefighters cut power to the unit. 

 

December 7, 2020

12:18 a.m.

Medical Emergency, 10000 Block of White Bluff Road

A citizen walked up to Fire Station 2 seeking help for an injured person at a nearby apartment building. At the apartment firefighters discovered an elderly individual had fallen and was bleeding. Firefighters provided patient care until EMS arrived.

5:12 p.m.

Smoke Scare, 300 Block of East 65th Street

Units were dispatched to the report of a structure fire. On scene they discovered that the resident started a fire in the fireplace without opening the flue, which caused smoke to fill the home. Firefighters opened the flue and cleared the home of smoke.

 

December 1, 2020

11:49 a.m.

Fire, 1000 Block of Shawnee Street

Firefighters responding to a structure fire discovered smoke coming from an apartment balcony and quickly extinguished the blaze.
