January 2021 Responses
SAVANNAH, GA (Friday, February 8, 2021) – During the Month of January, the Savannah Fire Department responded to more than 763 incidents including 65 fires, 342 emergency medical service and rescue calls, 43 hazardous condition calls, 48 public service and other calls, 99 smoke scare calls and 166 false alarms. Of the 65 fires, 11 were structure fires. Below is a detailed summary of the notable calls for service in January:
January 31, 2021
10:16 p.m.
Excessive Heat, 900 Block of Mohawk Street
The Savannah Fire Department responded to the report of a fire at a residence but found no smoke or flames. Upon further investigation they discovered charring on the wall behind the dryer. Firefighters checked for damage to the dryer and extension into the wall. They also made sure the smoke detector was operable before clearing the scene.

Fire, 10600 Block of Abercorn Street
Units were dispatched to the report of a fire in an apartment. They discovered a cooking fire that was out upon their arrival. Fire fighters checked for extension. And ventilated the apartment.

Accident with Injuries, Wheaton and Cedar streets
Firefighters responding to a vehicle accident with injuries discovered a driver that was breathing but unresponsive. They provided basic life support until EMS arrived on scene.

Smoke Scare, 2400 Block of Alaska Street
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of an open area fire in a residential neighborhood. They discovered a homeowner using yard debris as fuel for an outdoor cookout. Firefighters extinguished the fire and advised the resident of the City ordinance barring yard debris fires.

Fire, 6900 Block of Key Street
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of an open area fire and discovered that a dead tree limb had fallen onto a power line, causing a grass fire below. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and called the power company to mitigate issues with the power line.

Savannah Fire units were dispatched to a vehicle accident with entrapment. They discovered an individual trapped inside a wrecked vehicle. Firefighters removed the windshield to rescue the victim.

Units dispatched to an open area fire found a pile of burning construction material on the railroad tracks. They extinguished the fire.

Firefighters responded to the report of a person passed out in a parked vehicle. They discovered an unresponsive individual behind the wheel of a car with the engine running. Firefighters woke the individual up and provided patient care until EMS arrived on scene.

Fire, 100 Block of Hampstead Avenue
Savannah Fire Units responded to a fire alarm on the 8th floor of a high-rise structure. They discovered a flowerpot filled with smoldering artificial flowers in the elevator lobby. It appeared as if a lit cigarette caused the smoldering fire. Firefighters removed the flowerpot and ventilated the 8th floor elevator lobby.

Units responding to a vehicle accident discovered an injured motorist. Firefighters provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Arching Electrical Equipment, 300 Block of East Gwinnett Street
Firefighters were dispatched to a business for the report of arching electrical equipment. They discovered a sparking low voltage wire near a freezer and removed it. The manager was instructed to call an electrician.

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to a dumpster fire at a college campus. They discovered a pile of items on fire near a dumpster and extinguished it.

Firefighters were dispatched to a medical emergency at a residence. They discovered an individual who became lightheaded while cleaning a toilet with bleach and toilet bowl cleaner. Firefighters provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Units responded to the report of a gas leak outside. They discovered that a construction crew hit a gas line while using an excavator. Firefighters established a safe zone around the leak and stood by until the gas company repaired the line.

Firefighters responding to a structure fire discovered smoke coming from the porch of a single story, wood frame residence. They extinguished a fire caused by charcoal left on the porch after a cookout.

Cooking Fire, 1500 Block of Benton Boulevard
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a kitchen fire. The fire was out upon their arrival. A candle in a glass holder had been placed on the stovetop to melt the wax. The heat caused the glass to shatter and wax spilled on the burner. Burning wax caused the apartment to fill with smoke. Firefighters removed the burner, ventilated the residence and provided patient care to the resident who was cut by broken glass.

Medical Emergency, ACL Boulevard and Westlake Avenue
Units were dispatched to the report of unresponsive person. They discovered an individual laying down in the roadway and behaving erratically. Firefighters worked with EMS and Savannah Police to address the individual’s needs.

Gas Leak, 400 Block of East Broad Street
Firefighters were dispatched to a gas leak outside a school. Units sheltered all the building occupants in a safe place until the issue was mitigated. They discovered a broken gas line behind the cafeteria and stood by until the gas company repaired it.

Vehicle Extrication, Abercorn Street and East Jackson Boulevard
Firefighters responding to a vehicle accident with injuries discovered an injured victim trapped inside a wrecked car. They removed the car door, rescued the victim and turned patient care over to EMS.

Savannah Fire responded to a fire at a petroleum distribution plant. They discovered that a fire in the petroleum distribution system had been extinguished by plant employees prior to their arrival. Firefighters checked for hot spots and cooled down the equipment.

Units were dispatched to a residential structure fire. Firefighters discovered heavy black smoke coming from the garage. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading to the house.

Carbon Monoxide Incident, 100 Block of Austin Way
Firefighters were dispatched to a carbon monoxide alarm at a residence. The homeowner was not there. They had been tuning up a car, which was left running inside a locked garage. Exhaust from the car entered the home and triggered the carbon monoxide alarm. Firefighters rescued a dog that was caged in the living room and ventilated the structure.

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of an unconscious person at a funeral parlor. They discovered an individual who had fainted. Firefighters provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Fire, 300 Block of West Duffy Street
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a fire at a convenience store. They discovered light smoke coming from a smoldering windowsill that was littered by discarded cigarettes. Firefighters extinguished the blaze.

Fire, 900 Block of West 39th Street
Units responded to the report of a residential structure fire. They discovered heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure and quickly extinguished it. None of the three residents were at home when firefighters arrived. A unit discovered one of the residents down the street. The individual was suffering from burns. Firefighters provided patient care until EMS arrived. Power to the structure was cut and the three residents were displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Vehicle Extrication, Dean Forest Road and I-16
Units were dispatched to an accident with injuries. The driver was trapped inside. Firefighters removed the door, rescued the driver, and turned patient care over to EMS.

Firefighters responded to the report of yard waste burning in a backyard. They discovered that fire had extended to a structure. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and checked for hot spots.

The Savannah Fire Department responded to a carbon monoxide alarm at a residence. They discovered a gas fireplace insert was emitting carbon monoxide. The fireplace was shut off at the gas valve and the resident was advised to call a technician.

Firefighters responding to an alarm at an apartment complex discovered flooding caused by a broken water main. Firefighters shut off the water valve and the facility remained on fire watch until the sprinkler system was repaired.

Units were dispatched to the report of a shooting. They discovered an injured individual lying in the street and provided patient care until EMS arrived.

The Savannah Fire Department responded to a gas leak outside they discovered that a worker cut a gas line to a swimming pool heater. Firefighters shut off the gas at the meter and called the gas company to the scene to mitigate the issue.

Units were dispatched to an open area fire burning dangerously close to a structure. Firefighters discovered a large fire in a backyard, which had spread out of control and damaged the wooden fence and pool pump shed. Firefighters extinguished the fire and cut power to the pool pump.

Firefighters responding to an accident with injuries found an individual lying on the ground, unable to move their arm. The injured person had fallen off a bicycle and hit the curb. Firefighters provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a laundry room fire at a residence. The fire was out upon their arrival. Firefighters ventilated the structure, installed a smoke alarm, provided patient care to an individual who was overcome by smoke and checked for extension.

The Savannah Fire Department responded to a fire at an industrial plant. They discovered machinery and large rolls of paper on fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire and cleared debris from the structure.

Gas leak, 1800 Block of East Victory Drive
The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to the report of a gas leak inside a restaurant. Firefighters discovered that someone had entered the restaurant and broke the knobs off the gas stove. Firefighters cut gas to the structure, notified the gas company and fire investigator, then turned the scene over to police.

Firefighters responding to the report of a backyard grass fire discovered that a resident used gas to start a fire in a fire pit. Heat from the fire caused the gas can to catch fire. Firefighters extinguished the fire and advised the homeowner about fire safety and the dangers of using gasoline to start fires.

Units were dispatched to the report of a choking infant. They discovered a conscious and alert infant who was spitting up mucus after a feeding. Firefighters provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of a structure fire. They discovered fire on the porch and wall of a home as well as a pile of burning rubbish on a nearby sidewalk. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fires and made sure there was no extension into the building. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
