March 2021 Responses
SAVANNAH, GA (Thursday, April 8, 2021) – During the Month of March, the Savannah Fire Department responded to more than 953 incidents including 73 fires, 487 emergency medical service and rescue calls, 41 hazardous condition calls, 57 public service calls, 110 smoke scare calls and 185 false alarms. Of the 73 fires, 17 were structure fires. Below is a detailed summary of the notable calls for service in March:
March 31, 2021
3:38 p.m.
Fire, 0 Block of Royal Inn Court
Units were dispatched to a structure fire. Upon their arrival, firefighters discovered smoke and flames streaming from the home and an individual with burn injuries in the front yard. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and rescued two cats from the home. Two people were displaced. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

1:31 p.m.
Fire, 600 Block of Indian Street
Units responding to an alarm at an apartment building discovered that the sprinkler system had extinguished a fire in one of the units. The fire appears to have started when cardboard boxes fell onto a stove and accidentally turned on a burner. Although the fire was out, the sprinkler system flooded six units. All but one unit was vacant.

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to an unresponsive person at a residence. They provided medical care until EMS arrived.

Firefighters were flagged down by a hotel employee to assist with an unconscious person. Firefighters provided care until EMS arrived.

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to the report of an unconscious person at a residence. They discovered a person on the bathroom floor and provided care until EMS arrived.

Savannah Fire Department Units responded to the report of an unconscious toddler at an apartment complex. They discovered a conscious child who had been ill earlier. Firefighters provided care until EMS arrived.

Fire, 2500 Block of Florida Avenue
Units were dispatched to a structure fire. They arrived on scene to find a police officer removing an individual from a residence with a small fire burning in the living room. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, which started when a flame from a candle came in contact with a window curtain. No one was displaced.

Accident with Injuries, West Bay Street and East Lathrop Avenue
Units dispatched to a two-vehicle accident discovered two people with lacerations and abrasions. Firefighters provided care until EMS arrived.

Units were dispatched to the report of an unresponsive person. They performed CPR until EMS arrived.

Downed Power Line, 2500 Block of Habersham Street
Units were dispatched to a downed powerline. They discovered a dead animal near a power pole and power line that came down in a parking lot. Firefighters created a safe zone and stood by until Georgia power mitigated the issue.

Medical Emergency, 200 Block of Executive Circle
Savannah Fire responded to the report of an unresponsive person in a business office parking lot. They discovered an individual who had collapsed. Firefighters provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Medical Emergency, 1300 Block of Bradley Boulevard
An individual walked up to Station 11 and asked that firefighters assist an individual at a nearby apartment complex. Units discovered a man in his apartment with a dislocated shoulder. They stabilized the patient, provided care and advised him to go to the hospital for further evaluation.

Elevator Rescue, 300 Block of West Oglethorpe Avenue
Savannah Fire Department units responded to the report of a person stuck in an elevator. Firefighters discovered a person inside a stalled elevator at a public building. They removed the individual through the roof escape hatch and cut power to the stalled elevator.

Medical Emergency, 1400 Block of Richards Street
Units were dispatched to the report of an unresponsive adult at a childcare center. Firefighters discovered an individual on the ground and rendered aid until EMS arrived.

Public Service, 700 Block of Beechwood Court
Firefighters were dispatched to a hazmat call at a residence. The residents said they were cleaning the carpet with a gallon of bleach and became overwhelmed by the fumes. Firefighters monitored the air, called EMS to the scene and ventilated the structure for more than 30 minutes. No hazards were detected.

Fire, 100 Block of Oaktrace Place
The Savannah Fire Department was called to the scene of a structure fire. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and power to the structure was cut. The water was shut off at the meter and GA Power pulled the power from the structure.

Medical Emergency, 200 Block of West Gaston Street
Firefighters were dispatched to a medical emergency. They discovered a person who reportedly fell off a first-floor balcony onto the sidewalk below. Firefighters provided aid until EMS arrived on scene.

Savannah Fire Units were called to an open area fire. They discovered an individual burning a stump and several logs in his front yard. Firefighters extinguished the fire and informed the individual of the City ordinance prohibiting yard waste fires.

Public Service, 100 Block of Grayson Avenue
The Savannah Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire. Firefighters discovered a black Chevy truck with the hood up but no smoke or flames. The truck owner informed them that a cat was stuck in the serpentine belt under the hood. The cat’s front leg and paw was trapped between the belt and a pulley. The truck owner asked Firefighters to cut the serpentine belt to free the cat. They cut the belt. The cat ran away.

Firefighters were dispatched to the report of an unresponsive person. They found an individual on the ground Firefighters rendered aid until EMS arrived.

Fire, 11900 Block of White Bluff Road
The Savannah Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire at an apartment complex. They discovered heavy smoke and flames coming from the engine block of a vehicle parked in front of an apartment building. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, preventing extension to the building. Some sections of the exterior building siding and a vehicle parked in the adjacent space sustained heat damage.

The Savannah Fire Department was dispatched to an accident with injuries. Firefighters discovered a person on the ground and rendered aid until EMS arrived.

Gas Leak, 11400 Block of White Bluff Road
Units responding to the report of the smell of gas inside an apartment building detected elevated gas levels. Firefighters determined that leak was coming from a hot water heater in attic. Gas to the structure was cut and ventilation was conducted in two impacted apartments.

Fire, 2200 Block of East Victory Drive
Units were dispatched to the report of a fire on an apartment balcony. Firefighters discovered that neighbors called because an individual was burning paper in a trash can. The fire was out, but firefighters checked for extension to the structure and used water cans to make sure there were no hot spots. The resident was notified of the City ordinance barring balcony fires and the scene was turned over to Savannah Police and the property manager.

Accident with Injuries, Abercorn Street and Mall Boulevard
Firefighters were dispatched to an accident with injuries. They discovered an overturned motorcycle and the motorcycle driver laying on the ground suffering from severe trauma. Firefighters provided care until EMS arrived.

Vehicle Extrication, East DeRenne Avenue and Reynolds Street
Savannah Fire responded to the report of a two-vehicle accident with injuries. They discovered several injured people. One was trapped inside a car. Some firefighters assisted EMS with patient care while others stabilized the wrecked vehicle and extricated the trapped victim.

The Savannah Fire Department responded to the report of an unconscious person. Firefighters discovered a conscious individual on the ground, complaining of dehydration. Firefighters rendered aid until EMS arrived.

A Savannah Fire Unit happened upon a pedestrian laying in the roadway. Firefighters rendered aid. The individual said they became dizzy after drinking alcohol and fell. The individual left the scene before EMS arrived.

Units were dispatched to assist a citizen with a flooding issue at an apartment. They discovered a broken faucet that would not shut off. Firefighters shut off water to the apartment and removed excess flood water.

Fire, 1200 Block of East Bolton Street
Firefighters were dispatched to the report of fire at a two-story residential structure. On scene they discovered a small basket with smoldering items inside. The basket was removed from the home and firefighters replaced the smoke alarm batteries.

Elevator Rescue, 0 Block of West River Street
Units rescued five people from a stalled elevator. Power to the elevator was secured and the entrances were blocked off.

Chemical Spill, 600 Block of West 54th Street
The Savannah Fire Department responded to the report of a medical emergency. They discovered a child who was vomiting and complaining of burning lips and throat. Firefighters rendered aid and called a Hazmat team to monitor the gas levels inside the home. Inside a bedroom they discovered a wet carpet with an aerosol can and a lighter on it. Meters detected that the substance inside the can was an irritant that could have caused the child’s symptoms.

Alarm Activation, 200 Block of West Montgomery Street
Savannah Fire responded to a fire alarm activation. On scene they discovered that a fire suppression sprinkler activated in one of the bedrooms and flooded the apartment. The water was shut off to stop the sprinkler flow and power was secured at the breakers. Crews removed the bulk of the water from the apartment floor. The Fire Marshal’s Office was notified of the system activation.

Firefighters responded to the report of an unresponsive person at an apartment complex. They discovered an unresponsive person on the sidewalk and provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Accident with Injuries, 1600 Block of East President Street
Firefighters were dispatched to a vehicle accident involving an injured pedestrian. They discovered an unresponsive person laying in a ditch. Firefighters assisted EMS with CPR, patient packaging and transport.

Units were called to assist an unconscious person on the sidewalk outside a downtown restaurant. Firefighters discovered an unresponsive person and provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Vehicle Extrication, 500 Block of East State Street
Units were dispatched to a person trapped inside a vehicle. They discovered a vehicle hit a tree and one person was entrapped. Firefighters removed the driver’s door to gain access to the victim. They extricated the victim and turned the victim over to EMS.

Firefighters were dispatched to a medical emergency involving an individual who fell down a flight of stairs. Firefighters discovered an injured individual and provided patient care until EMS arrived.

Accident with Injuries, 100 Block of General McIntosh Boulevard
Units responded to the report of a motorcycle accident. They discovered an individual laying face-down, about 20 feet from their motorcycle. Firefighters provided care until EMS arrived on scene.

Smoke Scare, 14000 Block of Abercorn Street
Units were dispatched to a large amount of smoke and possible fire at a large retail store. Firefighters found no signs of smoke at the store. Upon further investigation they discovered that the smoke was caused by an employee who got into their car and burned rubber as they were driving out of the lot.

Accident with Injuries, 8800 Block of White Bluff Road
Savannah Firefighters responded to a two-car accident with injuries. They discovered that one of the vehicles was a police car. It struck a fire hydrant and knocked it over, causing a flood. There was also a damaged power pole nearby. Firefighters checked both drivers for injuries, notified the Water Department about the damaged hydrant, and called the power company to address the power pole issue. Firefighters stood by until the issues at the scene were mitigated.

Fire, 600 Block of West 38th Street
Savannah Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire. They found visible smoke and flames streaming from the rear of a residential structure. Firefighters forced entry and quickly extinguished heavy fire in a hallway. They prevented the fire from extending to a neighboring structure, which sustained minor heat damage.

Units were dispatched to a fire at a residential structure. They quickly extinguished the fire, which displaced two people.

Savannah Fire responded to a two-car accident with entrapment. Firefighters used extrication tools to remove the door and roof of one vehicle and extricate the victim.

Fire, 1300 Block of East 71st Street
Units responded to report of a fire. They discovered a backyard fire burned out of control and spread to exterior portions of a residence. The homeowner had used a garden hose to extinguish most of the fire. Firefighters used their tools to fully extinguish the blaze and checked the home for hot spots.

Fire, 500 Block of East Anderson Street
Units responded dispatched to a structure fire discovered smoke and flames coming from a second story porch. Firefighters quickly extinguished the porch fire, preventing the blaze from extending to the interior of the home.

Vehicle Extrication, Abercorn Street and Abercorn-White Bluff Connector
Firefighters were dispatched to a three-vehicle accident with entrapment. They pried the driver’s side door of one of the damaged vehicles to access a victim. Firefighters checked the occupants of all three vehicles for injuries and turned patient care over to EMS.

Fire, 0 Block of La Brea Boulevard
Units were dispatched to a structure fire. They discovered light smoke coming from front of a residential structure. Firefighters found smoke throughout the house, but no fire. The cabinets around the dishwasher showed signs of fire damage. The resident said she sprayed the cabinets and dishwasher with a garden hose. She received and electrical shock when she touched the dishwasher, so she turned off the power at the breaker box. Firefighters ventilated the building, checked for hot spots, removed the dishwasher and made sure power was cut.

The Savannah Fire Department was called to assist an unresponsive person in a bus station bathroom. They arrived on scene to find a responsive, but ill person. Firefighters provided care until EMS arrived.

Units were dispatched to the report of a water leak at a housing complex. Firefighters discovered wastewater and sewage throughout a home. Firefighters contacted property maintenance and the Red Cross.

Extrication, 1300 Block of Eisenhower Drive
Firefighters responded to a vehicle accident, involving a car that drove through a post office window and injured several patrons. Firefighters evacuated the structure and extricated three people who were pinned between the vehicle and building debris. EMS was called to the scene to provide care and transport the extricated victims.

Units responded to the report of a two-car accident with injuries. Firefighters removed the roof of one vehicle and extricated a victim.

Savannah Fire Department units responded to a structure fire at a residence. Firefighters and a police officer on the scene helped one victim out of the building while other firefighters extinguished a blaze in the kitchen and attic.

Fire Fighters responding to a fire at an apartment complex discovered fire in a kitchen, which they quickly extinguished.

Fire, 10700 Block of Egmont Road
Units were dispatched to a structure fire at an apartment complex. A resident reported that there was a fire in the apartment wall Firefighters entered the apartment, pulled the sheet rock and found smoldering insulation inside the wall. They extinguished the fire and checked for hot spots.

Gas Leak, 500 Block of Pennsylvania Avenue
Units responded to the report of a gas leak inside a structure. Firefighters found no signs of gas or hazardous conditions inside the apartment. However, upon further investigation a Hazmat Unit discovered a freon leak coming from the second-floor air conditioning unit. Maintenance was called to secure the unit and firefighters checked for freon leaks in the surrounding apartments.

Fire, 4700 Block of Waters Avenue
Firefighters were dispatched to a fire alarm activation. They discovered smoke coming from a utility room. A capacitor on the MRI invertor melted and the resulting smoke activated the alarm. Firefighters shut off the invertor and ventilated the building.

Firefighters responded to the report of an accident with injuries. They discovered an injured motorist trapped inside a vehicle and used extrication tools to rescue him.

Fire, 900 Block of West 41st Street
Units responding to the report of a burning vehicle under the carport discovered that the vehicle fire reached the roof, entered into the attic of the house, and caused fire damage to a minivan parked nearby. Firefighters extinguished the fire and checked for hot spots.

Units responded to a retail store parking lot for the report of a child locked in a car. They discovered a two-year-old locked in the back seat. The child was not in distress. Firefighters extricated the child.
