Final Storm Debris Collection Routes to Begin Nov. 25
SAVANNAH – The final citywide storm debris collection route will begin on Monday, Nov. 25.
The City of Savannah activated a contractor to remove storm debris created in the wake of Hurricane Helene and began operations in impacted neighborhoods on Oct. 4.
As of Tuesday, Nov. 19, the City estimates more than 67,204 cubic yards of vegetative debris and 12,000 cubic yards of mulch debris have been collected. Early estimates indicated around 300,000 cubic yards of debris. However, the final total is expected to be closer to 150,000 cubic yards.
Residents are reminded to report missed collections or other issues by calling 311 or submitting a request through the SAV311 app. Residents are urged to place all storm-related debris at the curb by Sunday, Nov. 24, to ensure it’s collected during the final citywide pass.
The contractor’s final citywide pass will focus on large piles of debris that pose a risk to public health and safety. Smaller items and green debris, like leaves and branches, will be collected by the City’s Sanitation Department during regular yard waste collection routes.
To ensure efficient collection, residents must follow the debris placement guidelines:
- Vegetative debris (limbs, branches, and other yard waste) should be placed at the curbside or right-of-way, not in the street.
- Keep storm debris away from trees, poles, fire hydrants, and other structures that may block removal.
- Separate debris into categories: vegetative debris, bulk items, and yard waste.
- Avoid blocking roadways, sidewalks, or storm drains.
