City of Savannah Marketing and Communications Posted on November 11, 2025 | Last Updated on November 11, 2025

SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah is partnering with Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia to distribute 1,400 food boxes across all six Alderman Districts over three days beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 12 to help support households impacted by the reduction in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

The City will distribute 234 food boxes at two locations in different districts each of the three days ensuring equitable access and maximizing community reach. Recipients must be City of Savannah residents and ages 18 or older. One food box will be available per household while supplies last.

SNAP provides food-purchasing assistance for low-income individuals and families. Approximately, 14,736 households in Savannah, 45,000 households in Chatham County, and over 1.4 million Georgians receive public assistance through SNAP benefits programs. Due to the recent U.S. Federal Government shutdown not all SNAP recipients received their full benefits in November.

The City of Savannah announced last week they are partnering with Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia and the United Way of the Coastal Empire to provide assistance to those in need. The City has provided a $50,000 grant to Second Harvest to assist with the pre-packaged food boxes.

About United Way Coastal Empire

In 1938, the Community Chest was formed to address the needs of the Coastal Empire. The first campaign goal was set at $140,000 and was achieved that same year. In 1950, the Community Welfare Federation of Savannah-Chatham County was formed. It was only a matter of months before the Board of Directors voted to change the name to United Community Services of Savannah-Chatham County (UCS), a name that remained until 1975. In 1973, the United Way Helping Hand Rainbow replaced the United “U,” the original symbol used by UCS, and in 1975 the name United Way was officially adopted. 2018 marked our 80th anniversary.
