Jan. 2026 Project Update
Public Input Summary and Next Steps
Thank you to everyone who participated in the most recent public engagement efforts for the 37th Street Corridor Safety Project. A total of 90 participants provided input either by attending the public meeting held on November 3, 2025, at the Bull Street Library or by submitting feedback through the 37th Street corridor project website. Your participation plays a critical role in shaping the future of this important corridor.
At the public meeting and through the online exercise, participants were asked to share their safety priorities within a defined project budget across several potential improvement categories. Based on the input received, the preferred safety improvements were ranked as follows:
- Bike lanes (separated and/or marked)
- Pedestrian crossings
- Sidewalk improvements and ADA upgrades
- Pedestrian lighting
- Street lighting
- Driver alerts
- Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) technology
The City of Savannah heard this input and is actively using it to inform the next phase of the project.
What’s Next
The project team is developing conceptual layouts for the 37th Street corridor that will be shared with the public for additional review and feedback. These concepts will focus on the requirements of the City’s Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant and on the safety priorities identified by the community.
To help determine what improvements are possible, the City is collecting traffic and roadway data along the corridor. This information will help the project team understand how different safety improvements—such as bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, and intersection changes—can function safely and effectively.
The City of Savannah is also in the process of hiring a design consultant to move the project forward. As part of this work, the project will go through required environmental and historic reviews to ensure improvements are carefully planned and coordinated with the surrounding community and historic resources.
As part of this effort, the City of Savannah will enhance safety on 37th Street—a key gateway connecting downtown and midtown Savannah and providing access to major business corridors. The project will focus on 15 intersections identified as needing safety improvements. Planned upgrades include:
- Updated traffic signals and signal timing
- Dedicated left-turn lanes with protected phasing
- New and improved sidewalks and crosswalks
- Extended bicycle lanes to improve connectivity and safety
The conceptual layouts and proposed improvements will reflect the feedback received from the November 3, 2025 public meeting, the project website, and the priorities expressed by the participants who took part in the engagement process.
The City looks forward to continuing this conversation and encourages the public to stay engaged as the project moves forward. Additional opportunities for review and comment will be announced as the conceptual designs are completed.
