City Offices to Close in Observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
MLK Parade Road Closures Begin at 6 a.m. on Monday
SAVANNAH (Jan. 9, 2023) – City of Savannah administrative offices and facilities will be closed and Monday, Jan. 15 in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Emergency services will remain open.
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade will take place in the Downtown Historic District beginning at 10 a.m. at the intersection of E. Broad and Liberty Streets. The staging area, at the beginning of the route, will close at 6 a.m. Street closures will start at 9 a.m. All roads will reopen by 2 p.m.
No parking signs will be posted in advance of the parade. Vehicles remaining along the parade route and in the staging/disband areas will be towed at the owner’s expense. Residents are encouraged to visit savannahga.gov/MLKParade for the full parade route and street closure details.
Sanitation services will also be impacted by the holiday closures. Residents can expect the following changes to their schedule:
Residential garbage collection and yard waste collection services will not run on Monday, Jan. 15. Collection services will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 16, on a one-day delayed schedule.
Recycling services will not run on Monday, Jan. 15. Recycling services will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 16 running Monday’s route. Tuesday’s route will be collected on Wednesday, Jan. 17.
The Dean Forest Landfill and Bacon Park Transfer Station will both be closed on Monday, Jan. 15. Dean Forest Landfill will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 16 on a regular schedule. Bacon Park Transfer Station, which is always closed on Monday and Tuesday, will reopen on Wednesday, Jan. 17. Street sweeping services will also be delayed one day, picking up routes on Tuesday, Jan. 16
Residents are encouraged to consult the sanitation schedule packets disseminated each year and make note of what day sanitation collection will happen on their route. You can find the schedule at savannahga.gov/sanitation.
