Municipal Archives to Host District 5 Community Archiving Event
SAVANNAH (Jan. 10, 2024) – The City of Savannah’s Municipal Archives department will host a Community Archiving Event at the Liberty City Community Center on Friday, Jan. 26 and Saturday, Jan. 27.
The event is part of the Savannah Community Memory Project, an ongoing effort to preserve and make accessible the histories of communities missing from the City’s Archives. The project hopes to present a more inclusive and complete historical narrative of Savannah.
The District 5 Community Archiving Event is open to all residents, past and present, from all District 5 neighborhoods. New residents and youth are encouraged to participate. All who share their stories with the Archives department will have their voice, images, and documents become part of the collective memory.
This event will feature a variety of collection methods:
- Digitization Station: Bring photographs, documents, and recipes that help tell the story of your community (limit 10 items for on-the-spot digitization or we will accept temporary loans for offsite digitization and return items to the owner after the event). Focus on buildings, homes, businesses, churches, schools, parks, landmarks, as well as community activities, groups, and leaders.
- Oral History Station (by reservation): Archives staff will interview you, asking questions about your neighborhood and what makes it important and unique. Reserve your ½ hour session by contacting the Municipal Archives at Archives@savannahga.gov. Walk-ins are welcome for unreserved slots.
- Reflections Station: Share your thoughts and memories through written prompt cards. Perfect for those who are camera shy.
- Online Portal: Can’t come in person? Submit your memories and photographs through our online portal at www.savannahga.gov/YourHistory.
For more information, contact the Municipal Archives at (912) 651-6411 or Archives@savannahga.gov.
