[ARCHIVED] City crews respond to minor sewage spill

For Immediate Release
Date: January 13, 2016

City of Savannah Water Resources crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 12:40 pm Wednesday January 13, 2016, at 2306 Vicksburg Drive. An estimated 475 gallons spilled before being corrected at 12:59 pm. This is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was caused by a grease blockage in the gravity sanitary sewer main which resulted in an overflowing manhole. Crews cleared the stoppage with City vacuum trucks, contained the ditch and set up by-pass pumps to remove and pump contaminated water (a mix of storm drainage and sanitary sewer) from the ditch to the City sanitary sewer collection system. Spill notification markers were placed at the spill site, at the Placentia Canal at Bonaventure Road, and at the Thunderbolt Fishing Pier. All regulatory authorities were notified. Public notification is required per State guidelines.
