West 52nd Street between Montgomery and Barnard will remain closed for much of today as City Park and Tree crews remove a mature live oak due to concerns about its stability.
During a Wednesday inspection the tree was found to have significant vertical cracks forming on either side of the trunk between the two main leaders. Four certified arborists subsequently inspected the tree; each recommended removal of the tree out of concern for public safety. The tree’s trunk extends into the roadway, and several homes are located in close proximity.
Three neighbors of the tree were asked to temporarily vacate their homes Wednesday afternoon as a precaution. Hotel costs will be reimbursed by the City.
Crews began working on the removal shortly after noon Wednesday, with work continuing until about 7:30 p.m. Work is expected to continue through most of the day today.
