[ARCHIVED] Heavy rain closes streets

For Immediate Release
Date: May 17, 2016

Isolated street flooding was reported in a number of locations in Savannah this afternoon after nearly 5 inches of rain fell on parts of midtown and downtown.

Motorists should note that as of 3:15 p.m. Victory Drive’s intersections with Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Waters Avenue were closed to traffic due to street flooding. The extremely heavy rain also caused temporary street flooding in a number of other locations, though the water was expected to subside shortly with lighter rains. No reports of structural flooding had been received.

Crews with the Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police, Traffic Engineering and other departments were on-scene rerouting traffic. Pump stations were working at near capacity to help empty full canals.
