[ARCHIVED] New online collection features a look back at the Olympics

For Immediate Release
Date: August 2, 2016

The City of Savannah announced today the online availability of the Civic Magazine collection, made possible through a partnership between the City’s Research Library & Municipal Archives and the Digital Library of Georgia. Civic Magazine was one of the earliest television programs produced by the City of Savannah’s Government Channel 8, the City’s cable access channel now called SGTV, and helped the City government reach out and communicate to Savannah’s citizens in new ways in the late 20th century.

Several segments of Civic Magazine focused on the 1996 Centennial Olympics, during which Savannah served as host for the yachting events. To celebrate the 20th anniversary, the City has mounted an online exhibit to share photographs and artifacts from the Municipal Archives, and link to the Civic Magazine segments, that tell the story of the Olympics in Savannah. Visit www.savannahga.gov/olympics to view the materials.

“Civic Magazine captured the City’s engagement with the community, as well as the unique personalities of our leaders, citizens and neighborhoods, something that is not often reflected in more traditional records,” said Luciana Spracher, director of the Research Library and Municipal Archives. “Having the old Civic Magazine tapes digitized and made available online through the Digital Library of Georgia will open up this collection to our citizens, researchers, and City staff.”

The Civic Magazine collection is available at: http://dlg.galileo.usg.edu/CollectionsA-Z/civic_search.html. For more information about the Research Library & Municipal Archives visit www.savannahga.gov/MunicipalArchives or contact Library & Archives Director Luciana Spracher at (912) 651-6411.
