[ARCHIVED] City Engineer named Georgia Engineer of the Year

For Immediate Release
Date: March 16, 2017

Julie McLean, P.E., City of Savannah Director of Development Services and City Engineer, was recently named the 2017 Engineer of the Year in Government by the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers.

“Julie has been an Engineer with the City for almost 15 years. During her tenure as a senior engineer in the Water and Sewer Bureau she has managed some very large infrastructure projects,” said Pete Shonka, City of Savannah Assistant City Manager. “As City Engineer she has implemented many improvements to the plan review and construction permitting process including managing the transition from a wholly paper plan review process to a digital process all while managing record levels of development. This could not have been accomplished without there being a very energetic and talented City Engineer running the Development Services Department. The City is extremely lucky to have Julie as part of its staff. She is a very deserving recipient of this prestigious award.”

McLean is a licensed Professional Engineer in Georgia and Maine, and has 28 years of progressive civil engineering design, construction and management experience including over 14 years of experience with the City of Savannah. During her service with the City, she has personally managed infrastructure and building construction projects totaling over $50 million, and overseen the building permitting and inspection program for construction projects totaling over $2 billion. McLean was first female Professional Engineer hired by the City of Savannah, and when she was promoted to City Engineer in 2012, she became the first female to hold the position of City Engineer since the position was created in 1890.
