[ARCHIVED] City crews respond to minor sewage spill

For Immediate Release
Date: September 1, 2017

City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 2:24 pm Thursday, August 31, at Woodley Road and at Briarcliff Circle. An estimated 3,780 gallons spilled before the spill was corrected at 4:30 p.m. This is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was due to a sewer main blockage that caused two manholes (12406 Woodley Road and 12412 Woodley Road) and one sewer lateral clean-out (302 Briarcliff Circle) to overflow. City Jet-Vac trucks were utilized to remove approximately 6,000 gallons of storm/sewer water out of Holland Canal at the spill site and the blockage was cleared. Lime was placed around affected area for disinfectant. Spill notifications will be placed at spill site – Woodley Road/Holland Canal, at Robin Road/Holland Canal, and at Rivers End Boat Ramp.

All regulatory authorities were notified. Public notification is required per State guidelines.
