City Raises Largest American Flag in Savannah

SAVANNAH, GA (July 3, 2018) — Today, the City of Savannah raised the largest flag in the City at the new Veterans Memorial Park.

More than 100 people gathered for the flag raising ceremony at the park located at the end of the Truman Parkway along Abercorn Street. The 50 x 30 foot flag and the 100 foot tall flag pole serve as a centerpiece for the park which will soon feature enhanced landscaping, an honor garden, parking area, and benches.

City of Savannah Alderman Tony Thomas spearheaded this SPLOST-funded project. “As a City, we had a shared vision of what this could be. I can see the fully completed park in my head and it is beautiful and it is wonderful. We wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for the men and women in our armed forces today,” said Thomas.

Mayor Eddie Deloach, U.S. Representative Buddy Carter and Lt. Col. Kenneth Dwyer also spoke at the event. Savannah veterans, active duty military men and women and Southside residents attended.

The total cost for the purchase and installation of the flag and flag pole was $35,000.
