City Prepares for Arts Center Opening with Changes to Montgomery Street

SAVANNAH, GA (August 16, 2018) — The Mayor and Council approved the purchase of traffic utilities needed to return Montgomery Street at the intersection of Oglethorpe and Liberty to a two-way street.

The City is purchasing two mast arms which are used to hang traffic lights which are used to hang traffic lights on an intersection. They will be installed at the southbound intersections of Montgomery Street at Oglethorpe Avenue and Liberty Street.

The City’s Traffic Engineering Department will make the conversion in conjunction with the opening of the new Savannah Cultural Arts Center which is slated for early 2019. The Cultural Arts Center will provide educational opportunities for youth ranging from painting to performing arts.

“Converting Montgomery Street into a two-way street allows visitors to turn right on Oglethorpe and safely drop off people at the entrance,” said Traffic Engineer Steve Henry. “The conversion creates greater connectivity and access to the Civic center and Cultural Arts Center.”

The Montgomery Street conversion to a two-way street supports the cities strategic plan by improving traffic flow and providing more efficient neighborhood mobility and connectivity.

The project cost of $68,300 will provide additional mast arms that will hold traffic signals that will face southbound traffic. Currently, all lanes were dedicated to northbound travel.
