Pine Gardens Unveils New Neighborhood Sign

SAVANNAH, GA (September 11, 2018) — The City of Savannah held a neighborhood sign unveiling for the historic Pine Gardens neighborhood this morning. The neighborhood is located between President and Capital streets and bordered on the west by Pennsylvania Avenue. The new sign is located on the corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and Capital Street near Savannah High School.

Savannah Mayor Eddie DeLoach and District 3 Alderman John Hall attended the event. Constructing the neighborhood sign aligns with the City’s Savannah Forward strategic plan priority of Neighborhood Revitalization. These signs are a sense of pride for the people who live in the neighborhood.

Several past and present Pine Gardens residents also attended the event along with neighborhood association president Tonlya Boyd. “A lot of residents just know this area as East Savannah, but to have this sign put up, it identifies where the residents live. We are looking forward to more improvements in the Pine Gardens area,” Boyd said.

In 2014 the National Park Service listed Pine Gardens on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1942 homes in Pine Gardens were built to house workers from a nearby shipyard. During World War II Southeastern Shipbuilding built Liberty Ships in Savannah. Seventy-five years later the shipyard is gone, but Pine Gardens, with its 500-plus houses, remains as a reminder of Savannah’s shipbuilding war effort. “This neighborhood is the largest, more intact concentration of WWII defense industry housing in the State of Georgia,” Hall said.
