[ARCHIVED] Update on Hudson Hill Community Center

SAVANNAH, GA (September 12, 2018) — City of Savannah District 1 Alderman Van Johnson provided an update this morning on the condition of the Hudson Hill Community Center, located on Hudson Street on Savannah’s west side.

On September 5, City staff observed signs of structural issues in the Hudson Hill Community Center and out of an abundance of caution, temporarily closed the building. Earlier this week the center was evaluated by Collins Engineering and preliminary reports indicate soil settlement caused by water erosion. It appears the erosion has shifted the foundation of the building. The City is waiting for a recommendation from engineers as to the next steps.

The 22-year-old center was funded during SPLOST 2. Chatham County was responsible for the construction of the center; the City assumed responsibility of operations in 1995.

Funding to renovate and expand the center was not included in the SPLOST 6 referendum. Alderman Johnson said he is committed to identify funding “in short order”. “I plan to work with the City Council and the City Manager to fulfill this promise made to our residents,” Johnson said.

Programming offered at the center has been moved to the nearby Moses Jackson Center on Richards Street. The Parks and Recreation Department is transporting students who participate in after-school activities by van to the nearby Grant Center and Woodville Community Center. Outdoor athletic activities at the Hudson Hill center have not been impacted.
