City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 1 Knowlton Way, Sunday, August 25, 2013. The spill was the result of an 8 inch sewage force main failure - split in the pipe. The total volume discharged was 50 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
City Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 1:55 p.m. and the spill was corrected at 2:00 p.m. The station was turned off and the storm drainage ditch was contained and the mix of storm drainage and sewage was removed. The force main was repaired. An upcoming Capital Improvement Project is designing an upgrade to the lift station and a new force main to replace this existing one. A Spill notification will be posted at St. Augustine Creek.
All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
