City Celebrates Arbor Day at Andrea B. Williams Elementary
SAVANNAH (Feb. 12, 2024) – The City of Savannah Park and Tree Department, alongside the Park and Tree Commission, will partner with Andrea B. Williams Elementary School for a special Arbor Day celebration on Thursday, Feb. 15.
The event, traditionally held on the third Friday of February, has been moved to Thursday due to school e-learning on Friday.
The program will feature the presentation of the City's official Arbor Day Proclamation, followed by a commemorative tree planting ceremony. The Proclamation was approved by City Council during the Feb. 8 meeting.
"Arbor Day serves as a valuable opportunity to highlight the significance of our urban forest and its impact on our community," Gordon Denney, Director of the City of Savannah Park and Tree Department said. "Trees not only enhance our environment's health but also contribute to the beauty and enrichment of Savannah. It's impossible to picture our city without its urban forest."
Since 1985, the City of Savannah has proudly held the designation of Tree City USA, awarded by the Arbor Day Foundation. This recognition acknowledges the city's commitment to effective urban forest management through four key criteria: a dedicated tree board or department, a comprehensive tree-care ordinance, a minimum annual community forestry budget of $2 per capita, and an annual Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
While National Arbor Day falls in April, several states, including Georgia, celebrate Arbor Day during their optimal tree planting season. In Georgia, this observance takes place in February, coinciding with the ideal time to plant new trees in many southern regions.
