Residents Encouraged to Participate in Public Meeting,
Online Survey for Springfield Terrace School Future
SAVANNAH – The City of Savannah will host an informational public meeting on March 14 to discuss the rehabilitation of the historic Springfield Terrace School and gather feedback on its possible future uses.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the Floyd Adams, Jr. Administrative Building. The City is also gathering feedback through an online survey available at savannahga.gov/SchoolSurvey through March 31.
Springfield Terrace School, also known as Pearl Lee Smith School, is located at 707 Hastings Street on the west side of Savannah. The one-story, wood-frame building featuring four classrooms was built in 1926 to educate Black pupils who were excluded from most of the resources of Chatham County’s public education system at the time.
The school was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2022 in recognition of its significance in Education, Ethnic Heritage-Black, and Architecture.
In 2023, the National Park Service awarded the City of Savannah $50,000 as part of the Historic Preservation Fund’s African American Civil Rights grant program to fund the planning phase of the Springfield Terrace School Rehabilitation Project.
The grant will fund a building conditions assessment, rehabilitation plan, and architectural designs, following the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation & Restoration. These plans will provide the City a clear roadmap to physically restore the historic building and return it to an active community asset.
