City of Savannah crews responded to a major sewage spill at lift station 158 at 105 Crossroads Parkway, Tuesday, December 17, 2013. The spill was the result of a Lift Station control failure at sanitary sewer station 158 caused system surcharge resulting in four overflowing manholes along the Crossroads Parkway. The total volume discharged was 13,656 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a major spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
City Water and Sewer crews were notified of the spill at 9:39 a.m. and the spill was corrected at 10:03 a.m. control failure was corrected and the areas around manholes that had overflowed were cleaned. Notifications were posted at St Augustine Creek at Highway 21, lift station 158 at 105 Crossroads Parkway and at Houlihan Bridge Boat Ramp. Sampling is being performed as per EPD Major Spill Guidelines to determine the impact.
All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
