The City of Savannah is asking local rising junior and senior high school students with an interest in engineering to apply for a spot in the 2014 Savannah Engineering Academy, a weeklong program held in June.
Completed applications and teacher recommendation forms are due April 25, and available at www.savannahengineeringacademy.net. There is no application fee for the Academy but once accepted a $50 registration fee is required to hold a place in the program. Lunch and snacks are included for all five days of the program.
The five-day summer program will be held at Armstrong Atlantic State University June 9-13. Academy students will explore a variety of engineering disciplines through hands-on engineering challenges, field trips, and site visits to local business facilities, including Gulfstream Aerospace, EFACEC Power Transformers and the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. Students will have an opportunity to work with professional engineers from major engineering disciplines including civil, environmental, electrical, computer, aerospace, mechanical and manufacturing.
The Savannah Engineering Academy started in 2004 and was designed for students considering careers in engineering. It is run by a team of volunteers comprised of local professional engineers. Major sponsors of the Academy include: the City of Savannah; Gulfstream Aerospace; EFACEC Power Transformers; Hussey, Gay, Bell & DeYoung; Thomas & Hutton Engineering Company; MegaWatt Lasers; Terracon; Dulohery Weeks; CH2MHILL; Colony Bank; Armstrong Atlantic State University; University of Georgia College of Engineering; American Society of Civil Engineers; Society of American Military Engineers; American Institute of Aeronautics & Astronautics; National Association of Women in Construction; Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers; Savannah Economic Development Authority, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District.
