City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill 409 & 520 West 63rd Street at 3:10 p.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2014. The spill was the result of an overflowing manhole and lateral clean-out which was caused by a grease blockage in a gravity sewer main. The total volume discharged was estimated to be 250 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.
The spill was corrected by 3:35 p.m. Wednesday. The blockage in the gravity sewer was removed immediately and the sewer system will be cleaned and evaluated. The storm drainage system was mitigated to minimize contamination of State Waters. Spill notifications were posted at Temple and Belt Streets and at the Springfield Canal at Bowles Ford Park and Gwinnett Street. All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
