[ARCHIVED] City responds to minor sewage spill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Date: June 16, 2014

City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill south of Talmadge Bridge at 3:18 p.m., Monday, June 16, 2014. The spill was the result of a defective air release valve. The total volume discharged was estimated to be 50 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was corrected by 3:28 p.m. Monday. The valve was shut off and repaired. Jet-Vac trucks removed sewage and drainage water from ditch and flow was contained to keep residual flows from entering the storm system and the canal. Sampling was done. Spill notifications were put at LS 23 spill site and on the Springfield Canal west of # 6 Warner Street. All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
