[ARCHIVED] City responds to minor sewage spill

For Immediate Release
Date: August 19, 2015

City of Savannah crews responded to a minor sewage spill at 1 Knowlton Way at 12:05 p.m. Tuesday, August 18. The spill was the result of a force main failure. The total volume discharged was estimated to be 270 gallons. The amount of this spill is classified as a minor spill under State Environmental Protection Division guidelines.

The spill was corrected by 12:14 p.m. City crews turned the station off and utilized City contracted jet-vacs, along with City of Savannah staff and City jet-vacuum trucks to clean sewage and remove extraneous and residual flows from the ditch and surrounding area. The ditch was contained to stop sewage from continuing to flow into the ditch. The replacement of the force main is being planned. Spill notifications will be placed at the spill site near lift station 155 and where the storm drainage system crosses Crossroads Parkway. All agencies required by the State EPD were notified.
