City leaders joined private developers this morning to help plant the last of 29 live oaks in the White Bluff Road median as part of a public-private partnership to green the southside. The ceremony took place in the median in front of the White Bluff United Methodist Church on White Bluff Road. The event was hosted by District 6 Alderman Tony Thomas, who was joined by City staff and representatives from Walmart and landscaping company Hutton.
Alderman Thomas and City staff negotiated the tree planting with developers to mitigate the loss of trees that were removed for traffic signal and roadway improvements made to make way for a new Walmart Neighborhood Market on Abercorn Street. The agreement included the planting of 29 live oaks off-site in the median, as well as 328 new trees and 933 shrubs planted on the Walmart property.
