SAVANNAH, GA (Friday, August 31, 2018) – During the month of August, Savannah Fire responded to more than 673 calls for service, including 76 fires. Firefighters responded to 240 rescue and emergency medical service calls; 73 hazardous incidents; 32 service calls; 54 smoke scare calls and 162 false alarms. Of the 76 August fires, 22 were structure fires. Here’s a detailed list of the 22 structure fires that occurred from August 1 to August 30:

 Thursday, August 30, 2018

• Savannah Fire was dispatched to a kitchen fire at 1003 Porter Street, at 5:40 p.m. Thursday. Units arrived on scene within three minutes at 5:43 p.m. Firefighters discovered that a pot on the stove caught fire and extended into the cabinets. The blaze was quickly extinguished, preventing further damage. No one was injured, but four residents were displaced.
• At 11:04 a.m. Thursday Savannah Fire was dispatched to a house fire at 609 E. 56th Street. Neighbors reported hearing a boom, then smoke and fire began streaming from the front windows and attic. Units arrived on scene within one minute at 11:05 a.m. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and were able to confine the fire to the attic and front rooms. No one was home at the time of the fire. The two residents will be displaced. Savannah Fire investigators cannot rule out a portable air conditioner as the cause of the fire.

• At 5:52 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a fire at 1600 W. Bay St. Units arrived on scene within three minutes at 5:55 p.m. Firefighters discovered a fire burning inside the wall and quickly extinguished it. The fire was contained to the wall around the front door and window of the home.
•  At 2:13 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a Laundromat fire at 3805 Montgomery St. Units arrived on scene within two minutes at 2:15 p.m. Firefighters discovered a fire in one of the clothes dryers and extinguished it. They also provided First Aid to a customer complaining of smoke inhalation. The building was ventilated, gas was secured and EMS was called to assist customers with smoke inhalation complaints.

• At 2:46 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a fire in a vacant building at 722 W. Victory Drive. Units arrived within three minutes at 2:49 p.m. and quickly doused a blaze inside. The building was unoccupied and had no gas or electricity when the fire broke out.

Tuesday, August 21, 2018 

• At 8:20 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a fire at 915 W. 42nd St. Units arrived within 3 minutes at 8:23 p.m. Smoke and flames were streaming from the rear of the structure. Savannah Fire quickly extinguished the blaze and contained it to the kitchen, attic and back porch. No one was injured, but four residents were displaced.
• At 2:33 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to blaze at 219 E. 56th St. Units arrived on scene within four minutes at 2:37 p.m. Firefighters discovered a burning carport at the rear of a home. A pickup truck, the carport and its contents were damaged by the fire. No one was injured or displaced. The truck appears to have ignited the blaze. The fire melted the siding of a home at 221 ½ E. 56th St. and damaged the window sill and blinds of a home at 217 E. 56th.

• At 10 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a fire at 2238 Alaska St. Units arrived on scene within three minutes at 10:03 p.m. A window mounted air conditioner caught fire and burned portions of a wall and bedroom. A 17-year-old Savannah High School student who across the street discovered the blaze. He asked his mother to call the fire department while he went inside and rescued the elderly resident who was sleeping inside. No one was injured. Savannah Fire quickly extinguished the blaze, preventing the fire from spreading beyond the bedroom. However, power to the home was cut and the elderly resident was displaced. 
• At 1:14 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a blaze at 1934 Quincy St. Units arrived on scene within one minute at 1:15 p.m. The fire was out upon their arrival. An electrical issue caused leaf debris on the roof to ignite. The resident used a garden hose to extinguish the fire. Savannah Fire contacted Georgia Power to address the issue and made sure the fire was completely out.

• At 3:13 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a fire at Longhorn Steakhouse, located at 7825 Abercorn St. Units arrived on scene within two minutes at 3:15 p.m. An exterior wall near an outdoor bench was burning. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, preventing it from spreading to the building interior. Savannah Fire temporarily relocated customers while the blaze on the exterior wall was extinguished. No one was injured. The restaurant was not closed.

• At 11:14 a.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a blaze at 121 Brady St. Units arrived within one minute at 11:15 a.m. Smoke and flames were coming from a two-story apartment building. The flames spread to the neighboring St. Paul CME Church Social Hall, located at 1601 Barnard St. No one was injured. The man who resides in the apartment building was displaced and the social hall sustained minor damage.
• At 4:49 a.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to the report of a fire at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, located at 2 W. Bay Street. Units arrived on scene within three minutes at 4:52 a.m. They discovered that the contents of an indoor planter caught fire. A hotel employee extinguished the blaze, which generated heavy smoke. Firefighters ventilated the building while guests and employees sheltered in a safe place outside. No one was injured.

Thursday, August 16, 2018 

• At 9:15 p.m., neighbors reported seeing heavy smoke and flames coming from the roof of a home at 4731 Sylvan Drive. Savannah Fire arrived on scene within two minutes at 9:17 p.m. The rear of the home was fully engulfed in flames. The nine member family that resides there was not at home at the time of the fire. Savannah Fire quickly extinguished the blaze but the home sustained extensive smoke and fire damage. The nine residents, including two adults and seven children, were displaced.

Wednesday, August 15, 2018

• At 8:58 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a fire at 3 Verona Lane. Units arrived on scene within three minutes at 9:01 p.m. Fire fighters discovered a kitchen stove that had caused a fire earlier in the day. The fire was out. Firefighters made sure there were no hot spots and ventilated the structure.
• At 4:37 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a blaze at 2015 Mississippi Ave. Units arrived on scene within two minutes at 4:39 p.m. Firefighters discovered a light socket that had caught fire. Although the blaze was out, they made sure there were no hot spots and shut off the breaker to the problematic outlet. Firefighters also installed a new smoke detector in the home. No one was displaced.

Monday, August 13, 2018 

• At 11:58 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a blaze at the Coastal Transitional Center, Located at 309 Stiles Avenue. Units arrived on scene within three minutes at 12:01 a.m. Firefighters discovered a melted electrical switch. A security officer had used a fire extinguisher to put out an electrical fire. Firefighters checked for hot spots and shut off power to the problematic switch.

• Savannah Fire extinguished a fire on Texas Avenue Thursday evening. At 4:13 p.m. Savannah Fire was dispatched to a fire at 2123 Texas Avenue. Units arrived on scene within two minutes at 4:15 p.m. Firefighters observed light smoke coming from the attic and discovered flames coming from an air conditioning unit. They quickly doused the blaze. No one was injured. Although the fire did not extend into the structure, power had to be cut and the five residents were displaced.

Tuesday, August 16, 2018 

• Six residents of a rooming house at 918 Wilcox St. were displaced by a fire in the bathroom wall Tuesday afternoon. At 2:45 p.m. Tuesday Savannah Fire was dispatched to a rooming house at 918 Wilcox St. Residents evacuated the building after smelling smoke. Units arrived on scene within four minutes at 2:49 p.m. Firefighters discovered a fire inside the bathroom wall. The blaze was quickly extinguished and did not spread beyond the bathroom. No one was injured, but power and water to the home was cut. The six adult residents were displaced.

• Savannah Fire was dispatched to the house fire at 307 E. 32nd St., at 1:50 a.m. Thursday, August 12. Units arrived on scene within two minutes at 1:52 a.m. One crew discovered an unresponsive female in a front room while another crew quickly extinguished the blaze in an adjoining living room. The fire appears to have been sparked by a defect in an A/C window unit power cord. Savannah Firefighters rescued the female victim, carried her from the structure, initiated CPR and turned her over to EMS. She transported to Memorial Medical Center, where she later died from her injuries
